Expressing ourselves in Todays Society
In today’s society, it is becoming easier to express ourselves in the way that we would like to. We didn’t always have this freedom. It’s hard to believe that just 6 to 7 decades ago, Caucasians and African Americans were forced to be segregated or that only recently the LGBT community has become more accepted. Even our current President, Barack Obama, has “come out of the closet” in support of gay marriage just this year.
It seems to be that through history though, the people who have the hardest time expressing themselves are teenagers. During adolescence, teens are only beginning to find our who they really are and who they want to be. They may change styles of clothing, the way they talk or act, have a different group of friends and even change their beliefs they’ve been given by their parents. Adolescence is the time when teens learn to be more accepting of others. As kids, we often get angry, don’t want to share and get upset over the simplest of disagreements, but as we get older, we change emotionally, we become better people.
As time progresses forward, people are being able to express themselves through a many different variety of ways. The Internet has forever changed the way we communicate our ideas and beliefs and has revolutionized the way we can express ourselves. People have the ability to create their very own blog which can be seen by nearly anyone from across the world! We can write about any topic of interest and can find others from across the globe with similar interests, ideas and beliefs as well. We also have social networking sites such as Facebook which allow people to communicate instantly with each other. Another useful tool the Internet has provided in enabling us to express ourselves is that people can collaborate with others that live near them and can create small groups and social events in which people can get together in real life and can express themselves in many different ways such as book clubs or debate clubs.
In the end, we still have our problems. We have racism, violence, intolerance, war and hate. The very same problems that have been around ever since people and diversity have been around. These problems will never completely go away, but as time moves on, and as people are becoming more accepting of others, these problems can get better and people can and are being able to be themselves!
