Vampires and Todays Society
Today’s society has brought many changes for vampires. It is more difficult in some ways, and easier in others, for vampires to survive. The two biggest advantages which vampires have in modern society are the availabilty of highly populated areas for feeding and the lack of popular belief in real vampires.
The advent of computer technology and better long-range communication makes it more difficult for vampires to move among humans as easily as they did even a hundred years ago. In order to hold a human job and maintain a place to live, vampires must have a human identity. Newly created vampires are at an advantage here, as they can keep their old human identity until it becomes too apparent that they are not aging. If they ever run into problems, however, changing identities and moving quickly may pose a problem.
Older vampires, especially those without good connections, will have more trouble. They will need to establish false identities and do so well enough to avoid being caught and prosecuted for identity theft. They will also need to maintain good credit in order to purchase or rent a home or car. Without a passable false identity, vampires must remain underground or turn to crime. The the development of better communication and technology has spelled the end of days when vampires could move from town to town without too many questions.
The lack of popular belief in vampires is a benefit for vampires in today’s society, however. Although vampires permeate our popular culture, with such offerings as Twilight and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, these fictional creatures have little in common with the real thing. The idea of vampires as a real and present danger is no longer present in people’s minds, especially in a society which is not as focused on religion. This allows vampires to move more freely and to not be as careful about how they feed.
Additionally, the population booms have made it possible for more vampires to exist in a small area without fighting over territory and feeding rights. While there are still the odd humans who are killed by a feeding vampire, for the most part modern humans are safe from the possibility of becoming collateral damage in a turf war between vampires fighting over territory.
Vampires’ way of life is very different in today’s society than it was in previous eras. As long as they remain quiet and secretive about their real identities, however, the majority of humankind will never know they exist.
