How Globalization Promotes Social Diversity
Before globalization’s reach had spread as far in as current times, populations were much less diverse. The people of many cultures remained isolated from the people of other lands. Little understanding passed between the two worlds. As globalization increased, however, the people of different civilizations mingled, and a blossoming of social diversity has been the result.
Various factors play a part in globalization’s effect on social diversity. First, some cultures were once cut off from the rest of the world because of physical, economic, social or political factors. Outsiders rarely entered, and natives seldom left. As globalization occurred in the realm of business, scientific endeavors and cultural exploration, these virtual and solid borders were shattered. People have not only visited other cultures in ever-increasing numbers but made their homes in these other lands. Employees in businesses moved to other countries to promote business ventures. Social diversity increased as people from all over the world joined to craft unique combinations of culture.
Globalization has also promoted social diversity as cultures finally start to learn about and understand other cultures. Before globalization, there were many more misconceptions of other cultures. There was also a great deal of fear. Of course, it has not all been “roses” as some businesses and cultures have exploited the workers and environments of countries with poorer conditions, weaker governments and less regulation. However, much of the culture exchange has been positive. People have realized that although there are many differences in other cultures, there are many similarities as well. People are all human, and the same emotions and desires run throughout the whole world. With this knowledge, the people of the world have become more open to social diversity.
With globalization, many of the treasures of the different lands have been spread. These include delicious foods, master works of art, forms of entertainment, technological innovations and more. As cultures enjoy these new treasures, they may develop positive feelings to these other cultures and even take some of their attributes as their own. They may therefore be open to including people as their own as well.
Globalization has played a large part in the spread of social diversity in the United States as well as in other cultures of the world. It is vital that countries promote the positive aspects of social diversity, and protect those who are different from discrimination and other negative influences. As globalization continues, the diversity will allow the cultural treasures of the world to spread.
