What causes people to be antisocial
People can be antisocial for several reasons. Early childhood experiences are predominant amongst those. Children raised in abusive households, whether those of their natural parents, foster “carers”, governmental agencies or charity and supposed charity organizations, where they are not given the care and emotional support ‘all’ children should be entitled to, can become disassociated from their community.
Can we really expect people who have grown up disenfranchised from society to ‘not’ have antisocial tendencies? While some develop an even stronger code of morals than most “normal” people from having experienced the inequities of life from an early age, many are unable to overcome the injustices and harsh treatment that may have been inflicted upon them. That any who have survived sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse during their childhood developmental periods can interact with society in a functional and ethical manner is a miracle.
While those from obviously abusive backgrounds may be recognized, many families display a front to others disguising the realities of their internal family dynamics. This occurs at every level of society; some of the most emotionally abused children are those of the rich and famous!
Others may become antisocial during their teen or adult years. Anyone with a strong sense of personal ethics or religious/moral belief in good and decency can’t help looking at the world’s societies with a sense of horror. The inequities between the wealthy and poor, especially in the wealthy First World nations, are abhorrent to many. Too many multinational companies put profit before all else. Moving production jobs to Third World nations where workers including children slave away for a pittance to produce goods, often of poor quality, for the middle classes of wealthier nations.
Our societies are in a steady moral decline. The Roman Empire degenerated within its borders before outside barbarian hordes invaded and caused its ultimate collapse. Despite the appalling levels of terrorism in today’s world, we do not really have barbarian hordes waiting on our borders. Instead we are mass-producing them within our own countries. Too many inner city areas have been abandoned to virtually fend for themselves, only a few young people with astonishing sports abilities or stunning intellectual abilities and steadfast determination are able to escape their insidious culture of crime, drugs and violence.
Capitalist economics encourages greed, self-absorption and a lack of moral fiber. While many individuals and companies are recognizing the need to function in a socially responsible manner these days, far too many still do not. If we wish our children and grand-children to have a viable world and society in 50 years time, we need to start thinking about how our societies are now and how we can improve them. How we can bring back our “prodigal sons and daughters” into the fold. Most of the people who are antisocial today have legitimate reasons for being so, those need to be faced and dealt with by our societies if the human race is to have a viable and beneficial future.
