Influence of the Media

Racisms, prejudices, eating disorders, insecurities, violence, conflict and much more, what is the basis of this all you may ask? The answer is media. For decades and decades people have never failed to judge one another in a negative way. It’s not the fact that media is portraying an absolutely false image to society, but what gets to me most is that media is altering the way people view themselves, and in some cases the way people view their lives. My question is, why should we have to conform?

The majority of media today often present the perfect body to the public, hoping that consumers will strive to achieve fitness using a certain product or idea. While this form of advertising may somewhat increase a product’s revenue, many people suffer from inner conflicts as a result of failure to achieve the body of a top athlete or fashion model.

Media has always been the ideal way to express information to those who are willing to absorb it. The birth of media all started with simple spoken words telling people how to dress, talk and act. however it had to have been the narrow minded people who began to believe these words. With such a strong grasp on society, mass media is able to shape culture and influence people’s decisions and opinions. The use of media has soared to such great heights with radio television and the internet. It’s basically everywhere, and you can never avoid it Media tends to be the root of our insecurities, causing self-doubt which seems to be our enemy, but appears to exist in us all. Stereotypes developed by the media include overly thin women, and men with a toned physique. The intention of media was not to cause people to be self-conscious about themselves, it was only anticipated that media would advertise certain things, and convey a particular message. Nevertheless inner-conflicts have been established within people because they assume that they have failed to achieve the ideal appearance.

Wouldn’t everything be much easier if everyone was treated as an equal, and not judge based on what they have, or what they look like, but who they truly are. If it was up to me, people would not have to have the nuisance of others bringing them down. We have all been raised with the belief that beauty doesn’t exist among everyone. But it’s not true. Everyone in their own way has a different definition of what we may call beauty’. It’s not our ethnicity, wealth, appearance, status or anything else. The media set out to teach the public something, in turn we responded and gave it our entirety. Until learns to turn a blind eye to the negativity the media presents to us, we will forever leave ourselves bare and exposed without anything to show for except our susceptibility.
