How does the Media Portray Lower Class

The media engages in classicism, and lower class citizens are portrayed in a stereotypical and non respectful manner. The media employs the use of lower class citizens as a form of entertainment and continue the fallacy of lower working class citizens as un-intelligent, lazy people who use bad grammar.

There are certain reality television shows that engage in humiliating lower class citizens for entertainment. The entire content of the show is designed to ridicule and mock the guest who are less educated that the host. They systematically book guests who are too vulnerable to prevent their own exploitation. There are even shows where the host bullies the guest and speak to them in demeaning and unacceptable ways.

The news media is especially insensitive to the lower classes when reporting the news. On a daily basis, new media report crimes that are being committed by the lower classes and only report on high profile white collar crimes. Investigative reporters also target the working class for their undercover stings.

Reporters show up at crime scenes and video tape the family members of crime victims. There is no sympathy for the families and no respect for privacy. It is unacceptable to interview a person who is not accustomed to media attention and who is also in emotional crisis. This callous type of reporting is perpetrated against the lower class regularly. Other segments of the population are given time to prepare for an interview and can present themselves more appropriately.

The media is neglectful of the needs of the poorer citizens, whenever individuals request help from the media to assist with finding missing family members, minuscule coverage is given. Citizens of the lower classes are deemed less important by the media and unworthy of even a fraction of the coverage that others in the middle to upper echelon of society receives.

They also portray lower class citizens as always seeking handouts and show videos of them receiving aid. The hard working lower class people are missing from the media coverage while they showcase the less fortunate and the not so industrious.

Overall the media sends a negative message to viewers which become internalized as fact. The accomplished as well as  the persons striving for success are never seen in media coverage. The representation is skewed by the medias insistence on one dimensional coverage. It continues to portray the lower class as deviant and unmotivated. www.baylor.edu
