Article Title Ten Mistakes People Make

“To err is human”. Making mistakes is acceptable. It is learning nothing from mistakes that is intolerable. Mistakes can be made regardless of time, age or circumstance. There are, however, some mistakes that are made more frequently than other mistakes.

Forgetting the basic lessons our parents taught us as children about honesty, morals and values

Having integrity, knowing right from wrong, having compassion, sympathy and empathy are our core values that are, unfortunately, often forgotten in our stress-ridden, man-eat man world. In this economic recession most people are just trying to maintain status quo. Many are simply trying to survive and will overlook their values. This is a big mistake people make. Eventually you will be caught lying, or doing something you know is wrong. You also have to deal with your own conscious when having no integrity. The only thing that remains of you after death is your good name and reputation.

Refusing to recognize one’s prejudices

As of the last U.S. Census in 2010, there are no longer any minorities in this country. Many races and people of other cultures now make up a significant portion of the population. To deal with prejudice you must first confront it head on. By admitting you have a prejudice you can begin to educate yourself about other people and cultures. Prejudice is a big mistake because you are missing out on some of the most wonderful people you can ever know in your life.

Improper rationalization

Stealing from the workplace is often rationalized by saying the company only pays you minimum wage and you receive no benefits. Anything you take home from work is stealing. Stealing is illegal and immoral. If you get caught it will be one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your life. Whatever excuse you use is just that…an excuse.

“I don’t want to work with her because she is old and slow.” Not all “old” people are slow. Many have better skills and sense than you do. Many older people are far more intelligent than you. This is a mistake that is easily made. Decide to give everyone a chance before you pass judgment on an entire group of people.

Indulging in self pity

No one likes attending a pity-party. A “poor me” attitude is a mistake. Everyone will avoid you like the plague. You will be the only one attending your pity-party.

Developing a negative or fatalistic attitude

“Why bother trying to improve my work skills? I am never going to get a raise.” You are 100% correct. If you have a negative attitude you will never get anywhere in life. Stop looking at the glass as half-empty and see that the glass as half-full. Develop the power of positive thinking. There are many self-help books on the subject. People gravitate towards pleasant positive people.

Never stopping to smell the roses and enjoy the small things in life

Another mistake people make is taking things for granted. Always appreciate what you have and don’t dwell on what you want. Take time to enjoy your family by going to the park or some other outdoor activity where you can enjoy nature. Material things are temporary; your family, God and nature are forever.

Not setting goals

Not setting goals gives you nothing to strive for or look forward to in the future. Begin with small goals that can be accomplished quickly and easily. Then move forward to intermediate goals that can be met within six months to a year. Long- term goals may take several years to achieve but are definitely worth the work and wait. It is a mistake to not set goals and settle for what you have today. If you never finished high school your first goal should be to take and pass the G.E.D. Your intermediate goal may be to take online college courses or attend a junior college. Your long-term goal would be to earn a four-year degree from a university. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to obtain your goals as long as you steadily work towards your goals.

Making poor decisions

For every choice or decision we make there is a consequence. Consequences can be wonderful or they can be deathly. Making poor decisions is a huge mistake. If you go out drinking and then drive home, that is a very poor decision. The consequences could be getting caught by the police and receiving a D.U.I. or causing fatal injuries while you walk away unscathed.

Don’t be a quitter

“Winners never quit and quitters never win”. “When the going gets tough, the tough get going”. People often make the mistake of giving up when faced with obstacles. Consider obstacles to be challenges and rise to the occasion. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and guidance. Begin with baby steps. If you can accomplish small things you should be encouraged to keep trying.

If you strive to avoid these mistakes, you will be more successful and far happier with your life. Don’t be afraid to admit to your mistakes. Learn as much as possible from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them.
