Slang words of the 1950’s characterized a more innocent time. 1950’s slang words may be some what more boring in comparison to slang words of the 60’s, 70 and 80’s. But. slang words of the 1950’s were some of the first slang words of all time, that were transferred to each decade since that more innocent time. You will also not see 50’s slang that bellows swearing, and dishonesty. While some of the people from the 1950’s started getting attitudes with teenagers making the scene, you won’t see or hear 1950’s slang being disgusting, putrid, or gross. 1950’s slang started it all, Baby, and kept rocking and rolling for more than sixty years. Marilyn Monroe and James Dean were icons from the 1950’s and are still cool today in pop culture.

Actor- meant just that a phony kind of person.
Ankle biter- a kid, or a small person.
Ape-Here’s a short one for you; angry.
Baby-cute girl. sometimes still used today.
Bad news-to denote a person that has a depressing attitude.(She’s bad news.)
Bash-a great party
Big Daddy-an older person
Bobbed-shortened.
Cat-A hip person of the 1950’s, or a dude.
Cool-Obviously it means the same thing it does today, neat, cool, awesome, etc.Cool started in the 1950’s and is still around today!
Circled-married.
Cool it-relax.
Many words in the 1950’s carried “ville” at the end, and made the word more meaningful and sounded more cool such as; Coolsville, splitsville, squaresville, and deadsville.
Cranked-excited
Cream-damaged, such as “His car got creamed!”
Cut out- to leave
Cut gas-Be quiet.
Dolly-cute girl.
Duck Butt or D. A.- hairstyle of a greaser.
Flat-top-a certain haircut; a crew cut that was flat on the top.
Flick-movie
Frosted-really angry.
Heat-the fuzz, the police, the cops, etc.
Horn-phone
Kookie- weird, or nutty
Knuckle sandwich- a term used to tell what was going to happen in a fight; a fist in the face.
Make the scene-go out to an event, or activity.
Nerd-dork, geek, uncool person.
No sweat-no problem.
Pad- home, place to sleep
Shot down-failed, usually in an attempt at asking a cute girl out.
Split-to leave the scene, to go home to your place or pad.
You may have noticed that there are less slang words of the 1950’s. That’s because people from the 1950’s had less to do; there weren’t any home computers, cell phones, or text messaging. Back in the 1950’s people had more work to do around the house, and had to entertain themselves in more amusing ways.You see, sex and nudity weren’t allowed on TV, and Elvis was the big rage.
