The possible expression of a new movement
The Suicide Girls are a growing group of girls whom model nude or partially nude. As an organization, The Suicide Girls have their own magazine, their own internet and premium television programming, and many affiliations with a variety of companies and social groups most notably those involved in art, music, and entertainment.
Many people have debated whether the Suicide Girl’s photography and videos are considered pornography or art. Some have suggested that they represent a modern expression of feminism mainly based on the social concept that women who expose skin in today’s world aren’t being slutty, rather they are expressing their comfort with their bodies and their open support of individual freedom.
While most of society has been conditioned to associate any kind of nudity with adult content and sexual behavior, the Suicide Girls are often lumped in the broad group of pornography and adult content. In one way this is true, after all many people view the Suicide Girls and see them as a source of sexual pleasure and arousal, but unlike the majority of modern pornography, the Suicide Girls generally are not shown engaging in any sexual acts, rather various stages of getting undressed or in various poses. For this reason, the Suicide Girls are more an art form then raw, exposed, symbols of sex.
Most of the Suicide Girls are tattooed and pierced, a nod to the culture that has created and embraced them. However just because they are inked and pierced does not mean they are automatically sexually promiscuous or deviant just because of their rebellious appearances. Of course defining them as art or as pornography is ultimately up to the person viewing their photos.
As for being a representation of Feminism, artwork or photos alone don’t dictate a full representation of a movement such as Feminism. Nude women with tattoos and piercing can be a unique way of expressing an artistic and even tasteful style of adult art, but each of these girls are still individuals with their own set of beliefs and ideals that they support. To suggest they are automatically Feminists is a wrong conclusion to draw from just their photos because each girl may be partaking in the Suicide Girls for different reasons.
Also there is much debate as to whether taking off one’s clothes is really relevant to any major movement in society; again the reasons for doing so or viewing it vary from individual to individual.
So in closing, it would be safe to say that the Suicide Girls are producing adult content that can be both artistic and arousing. They manage to leave many who view the photos feeling more comfortable with the female body without immediately associating the nudity with sex as so many in the sex-saturated media and society always seem to do.
As an added supporting fact to classifying them as art, the Suicide Girls are often canvases for art in the form of tattoos and piercing. But saying they represent Feminism is a bit of a stretch, but once again this decision may be left up to those viewing and buying the art.
