Suicide Girls Feminism or Pornography - Feminism
What is pornography? Can you define it? Are you able to define it for society at large? Can you define it in such a way that it would be appropriate for both you and your neighbor? You can define it for yourself and your family easily enough but defining it for others is something you cannot do because your neighbor has different morals than you do.
Pornography has been defined as: Obscene writings, drawings, photographs, or the like, esp. those having little or no artistic merit. This definition is open to vast interpretation. Who is capable of defining artistic merit?
Feminism is defined as: –noun
1.
the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
2.
(sometimes initial capital letter) an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.
3.
feminine character.
So just how does this relate the Suicide Girls website and the suicide girls in themselves? The Suicide Girls say of themselves:” Suicide Girls is a community that celebrates ALTERNATIVE BEAUTY and alternative culture from all over the world.” Alternative beauty according to the Suicide Girls means girls who have piercings, tattoos, strange hair colors and the like. If you know what Playboy magazine is and what their models look like then flip that ideal on its head and you have the Suicide girls. Is that attractive? Certainly they are attractive but just not in the conventional sense.
The Suicide Girls is a site that requires you to become a member before you can have access to the entire site. While I haven’t become a member there are some free photos for you to peruse to determine if the site is for you.
The Suicide Girls pose naked showing off their tattoos and various piercings. One has to wonder if this is pornographic simply because of the nudity or are these women feminists. As feminists they would be showing ownership of their bodies and themselves.
One could wonder if these women are being exploited and the answer would pretty easy to determine. Since these ladies are not forced to do what they do then how can they be exploited? To be exploited they have to be seen to be taken advantage of and one aspect of that would be force. If these women were forced to upload naked pictures of themselves then of course they would be exploited. Perhaps the Suicide Girls is taking advantage of and exploiting the men and potentially women who pay to become members.
So is the site pornographic or feministic? I would have to suggest that the women on the site hold the power over their pictures and they are not being taken advantage of so the site is filled with women who know who they are and what they want. That would have to be the definition of feminism.
