Things considered rude in different cultures

There are different cultures around the globe and hence different cultures demand different manners, behaviour and etiquette. What may be accepted in a culture, may not be accepted in other culture and therefore it can be considered rude. So below is a list of things that are rude in different cultures.

Using the left hand

Using the left hand is regarded rude in India and some Muslim countries. The left hand is considered unclean or dirty in India. Therefore it is inappropriate to pass food or to consume food with the left hand; also one must avoid shaking hands or gesturing with it.

No shoes

It is regarded poor manners if a person wears shoes inside the house in certain Asian countries like Japan. Japanese people don’t wear shoes inside their homes. They remove their shoes just before entering the house, they also have a place specially kept for shoes. Also avoid showing your back to your host in Japan. It is customary to remove shoes before entering a temple in countries like India and Japan.

Making sound while eating

Making sounds while eating or slurping is considered rude in many foreign countries. However in Japan it is not regarded rude, specially while eating noodles. On the other hand it is regarded rude in Japan if a person makes sounds while eating with his mouth open.

The ‘okay’ sign

The okay sign is widely used in the United States, however in countries such as Germany the okay sign is considered highly inappropriate, rude and vulgar. If a person uses the okay sign in Greece or Turkey then it means that he is trying to convey homosexuality. Whereas in middle eastern countries the okay sign resembles the evil eye.

Meeting

Though shaking hands upon meeting is common and seen worldwide, it is regarded rude in China. It is rude to shake hands with members of the opposite sex in middle eastern countries. Speaking of hand shake, a strong hand shake is generally admirable but in Philippines it is a sign of aggression. Also it is rude to look into the eye while talking, especially to people that are elderly. On the other hand it is not rude in other parts of the world when people look into the eye while speaking face to face. Apart from this it is recommended  to greet seniors or elders upon meeting or talking. Also one must not use names for addressing people that are elderly. It is suggested to use titles.

Fingers crossed

A lot of people keep their fingers crossed when they are nervous or in a similar situation. Fingers crossed sign is used to convey positivity. However in Vietnam using crossed fingers is regarded vulgar as it symbolizes body parts of a lady.

The ‘v’ sign

The ‘v’ sign is usually used to convey peace, but in Great Britain and Australia it is equivalent of showing the middle finger and hence considered extremely rude and offensive.

No tipping

People tip in restaurants to symbolize compliment but in Korea and Japan a tip is considered as insult and improper.

To conclude, as there is differences in cultures there is differences in etiquette which may make certain things rude in different cultures. A person traveling to other country must bare the above-mentioned things in mind properly.
