Spring Vacation in Algeria
Going on vacation in the spring in Algeria is an ideal time, because the weather is temperate and you can appreciate many of the sites better than you would in the summer time when it can become very hot.
If you travel to Algeria during the spring I would advise you to visit Algiers and its landmarks first, because Algiers gets overcrowded in the summer. You should go the main attractions like La Casbah which is where Algerians were confined to live in during colonization, and featured in the movie “The Battle of Algiers.” It has recently been restored and is worth the visit. The botanical gardens of El Hamma near the Sofitel Hotel are also beautiful, it is a lush park right in the center of the city with many tropical plants and trees where one can breathe deeply, take a walk and contemplate. You can also take an air ride with a cable car to visit the basilica of Notre Dame on the heights of Algiers; it has a breathtaking view of the sea and the city. The Imposing white structure that you see built high up on the top of Algiers is called Maqam Chahid or the Martyrs Stand; it merits the visit, and it has a top quality museum on Algerian independence struggle and history.
During the spring, I would also highly recommend you visit the Kabylie region. It is the most beautiful during the spring and it is widely known as the “Switzerland of Algeria.” The mountains are magnificently green and trees and flowers are blossoming. The traditional Berber villages are even more beautiful during the spring and trekking up to visit them is a wonderful experience with the backdrop of the spring weather and country. The main cities of Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou are also much less crowded than in the summer when much of the Berber Diaspora are back visiting and you might find the mild climate more comfortable to visit the vestiges of these cities as well.
You might also take advantage of some of the thermal stations that are spread out all over Algeria. They are a good way to relax but also allow you to travel and visit more of the country. There are hot springs and many hotels that offer thermal cures in many wilayas (states) around Algeria, such as Righa in Chlef or Hammam Meskhotine in Guelma, Salihine in Biskra, or Hammam Bouhadjar near Oran. You might also want to visit other major cities which become very crowded in the summer such as Annaba and Constantine.
Vacationing in Algeria during the spring has its advantages as the weather definitely gives you more options as to places to go to where it would be too hot to appreciate fully in the dry summer heat.
