The Makings of a Good and Bad Society

The makings of a good and a bad society is how it treats it’s citizens. Society, depending upon the social economic system, always has a class system. In capitalistic models, there are social classes determined by incomes. In a Caste system model like in India, if the person is born into a caste they can not move into another caste system, they remain in that caste or class forever. In socialistic models, government provides services equally for all; but it’s citizen’s pay the highest taxes for maintaining government services. Theocracies dictate economic and social moral behaviors of it’s citizens; such as in Middle eastern countries. Dictatorships are unelected, self-appointed leaders that do not respect or care for its citizen’s and rule with oppressive methods to keep power. Autocracies are systems where monarchies rule with authoritative power such as a dictator; an example Saudi Arabia. In contrast, England has a monarchy but has no real governing power, parliament is the seat of government and the Prime Minister is the leader of the country.

When Society is good

Society is good when it is represented by its people and provides basic structural services that aid its citizen’s to become part of a productive growing economy. Investment in education, by overhauling the system to include more math and science courses. Some school systems in the Southern part of the US are still debating the science theories about evolution, climate change, and big bang theory. President Obama mentioned in the State of the Union how he wanted to allow high schools to develop programs that train its youth in highly technical vocations. The US example demonstrates how society is good; when it builds for the greater good of its economy and development.

Investment in infrastructure that includes transportation, electrical grid, highways and many other crumbling sectors that need to be repaired. This infrastructure rebuilding will encourage economic growth by creating new jobs, and attracting foreign investments.

Protecting the persons right to vote in elections as guaranteed by our US Bill of Rights, this document is unique to America. Foreign countries would be considered a good society, if they insured that all of it’s citizens have a voice in the government. Allowing liberty and freedom of expression for it’s citizens to voice their opposition or agreement of their government. Without this right, it would not be a good society, because its citizens would be oppressed.

When Society is bad

Society is bad when it disregards and oppresses it’s citizens of basic human rights, freedoms of speech, and basic services that create good economic development of jobs. Society is bad when it does not provide an outlet out of poverty; these elements to combat poverty is education, good health care, and social security programs for its elderly. Society is bad when it does not protect the most vulnerable in its community, such as the elderly and small children. Syria is an example of how an evil dictator uses innocent children as instruments to control its population against rebellion. The two-year war in Syria has been the most violent and inhuman on levels of how many children have been tortured and killed with impunity. How Syria has treated its people has made its people more defiant and more rebellious. One day, the leader will be removed by its people; just as Qaddafi was in Libya.

Who judges if bad or good

The world and it’s countries citizen’s will judge whether society is being bad or good according to the local issues. An example, would be when a homeless mother and child are on the streets of NY during a cold day; or a mentally ill person being allowed to roam the streets, without follow up of treatment. Our society has safety-net programs that help but unfortunately do not get people out of poverty; conservatives argue that its an issue of personal responsibility and not social programs.

This comment would make sense if it included all of the reasons; why poverty exists. Poverty makes a society bad because it highlights the failure of that society. Poverty encompasses many issues not just economic, it highlights issues in education, accessing higher education; lack of mental health services; and the influences of family dysfunction. People are not taught sense of self-esteem, value of work ethic and perseverance of life goals, and the lack of one of the parental figures in the home is relevant. There are many single parent homes in America and there is an absent parent in the child’s life. The lack of parental role from an absent parent in that child’s life does impact that child.

Society is judged by its actions, it’s compassion for it’s most vulnerable, the economic model that develops growth and jobs, respect of human rights, and protecting freedoms of it’s people. Without these fundamental elements of a good Society; the nation would never grow and thrive into the 21st century.
