How to Deal with Distractions while Working

Distractions are part of life and happen all the time so they can’t be totally removed but you can ease the amount of distractions or eliminate some of them.

Writers and other types of people who work out of their homes can have a huge amount of distractions that can keep them from productively finishing their work or getting their work done on time. Distractions can often get so bad that nothing gets done except the things that are causing the distractions.

Distractions no matter how small can cause you to start thinking about something else and get into the other thing your thoughts went to.

Almost everything can be a distraction for a writer such as

* lunchtime and supper time and preparing meals

* the phone ringing and you answering it

* email messages

* very personal emails

* taking the dog out and being waylayed by neighbors who want to get into conversations or gossip

* small children at home playing and needing attention

* other people who live with you in your house who are using the TV, radio, CD player, gameboys, or other video games

* your own thoughts can be big distractions possibly when you are in love or have some big problem in your life that is overwhelming

* losing something like your glasses or something else important

* a favorite hobby that you like doing

* household chores

It might be hard to remove most distractions from your life. You certainly can’t remove love, thinking about love or your lover, or preparing meals, or taking the dog out, or caring for your children, so how can you effectively deal with distractions?

The best way to deal with distractions is to decide ahead of time how you will handle the various distractions that can pop up, upsetting your work schedule or routine.

You will have to set a work schedule for yourself that includes all your particular distractions and how you will handle them. You could try to incorporate your distractions into your work. This might be hard for some people but for others it will work. It is possible to be so engrossed in your work that the distraction isn’t even there even though it is. It is like reading a book in a crowded noisy place but you don’t hear the crowds or the noise because you are so into your book.

But for those who can’t work the distractions into their work there must be another way and that is to write down all your distractions and then write down how you will deal with them.

Gradually through this method your distractions will be minimized.

Distractions will never go away - they are part of life, so you will have to put up with them as best as you can and by finding ways to deal with them you can make them less disturbing.  Such as

* preparing meals ahead of time and having them ready to eat while working

* shutting down all phones

* not checking emails

* working when the rest of the family are sleeping

So these are just some examples of how you can remove some distractions. Perhaps you can come up with other ways of dealing with your specific distractions. But remember you just can’t remove all distractions. Distractions are part of life.
