How the Order of Merit Operates

King Edward VII of England created the Order of Merit in 1902. The Order maintains 24 members, with each member receiving a 8 pointed medal or cross with the words “For Merit” emblazoned in gold on a blue banner. Members of the military who are given the Order of Merit receive the same badge, except that of the military division bears two swords crossing over the center. The badge is made of red and blue enamel with both a crown and laurel wreath.

For those who receive the distinguished award, a painting is commissioned that hangs along with those of the other members. In addition to other benefits and perks, members of the Order of Merit are invited to a dinner with the Queen of England every five years.

Recipients of the Order of Merit are accomplished members of society. The individuals who receive the award have been recognized for the achievements in the fields of literature, arts, learning and science. Their contributions to society are thought to have great benefit and are therefore worthy of the Queen’s prestigious award. Only the King or Queen of England can bestow the award on the chosen recipient.

Over the years, several people from outside England have received the Order of Merit. Mother Theresa of Calcutta, General Dwight D. Eisnhower and Nelson Mandela were honored as members of the Order.

There have even been a few people accepted into the Order that have raised a few eyebrows. Artist David Hockney was given the award in 2007. Hockney is one of the most well-known of British artists. Since the 1960’s Hockney has stood out as a brilliant artisan in both painting and photography. One of the things Hockney is most recognized for is his refusal to paint a portrait of the Queen. His reasoning? His time was consumed with painting local land-scapes. Hockney is also known for his refusal to be knighted. In 1990, Hockney adamantly turned down the chance to become a knight. His dislike of “prizes” of any kind has made him quite the exception.

The Order of Merit is limited to 24 members at any given time. Because the number of members is strictly controlled, a new member may only be added when one of the existing members passes away. Both men and women alike are included in the exclusive Order. Public servants, artists, bankers, politicians and scientists alike enter the Order to be recognized for their accomplishments. Members of the Royal family are also included. Prince Charles and Prince Phillip Mountbatten are long standing members.
