Why it Pays to have Good Morals what Morality Means what is Moral
It pays to have good morals because we all need one another. When we say we all need one another, it is more than just you and I. It is every living thing on earth.
Everything that exists is here for everything else to exist. The molecules in your body were once animal, vegetable, and mineral and they will be again. There is nothing in creation that does not need everything else for the balance of life to go on. Morality is about balance and justice, not bail outs and judgment.
We are now disturbingly out of balance. This means not only human wars, because there are too many human beings, but wars against all creation. Everything you eat, drink, touch and come in contact with today is largely composed of plastic, and therefore toxins. For more information on toxins go to Helium’s science section to read how your daily life is literally full of poisons, that you feed your family. Read about what is in your cell phone, computer, and everything else too, because it matters.
National Geographic just arrived at our Postal box this morning. In an ad mentioning the Amur leopard, it casually states there are less than 35 of them surviving in the entire world. That is horrible, and unacceptable, what kind of a moral species could let such a sin against God and Nature occur? The Amur leopard is fantastically beautiful. If the only reason it was created at all, is for pure beauty that would be enough of a reason to defend it. But of course, they have other roles as well. When those roles can no longer be performed by the “characters” of each individual part of our immensely complex web of life, the web of life begins to unravel.
When there is no more forest, due to livestock grazing, then soon there is no more soil. When there is no more soil, soon, there is no more food. When there is no more food, there is soon, not enough medicine. There is only one thing there will be plenty of, if recent history is any indication. There will be lots of blood and bullets, and refuges.
How could we become so non moral, when in each human breast there beats a heart that wishes for peace? The reason is simple. We cannot face what we do daily, we cannot admit it, and the truth is very painful. We must retreat into denial.
Things like the Inquisition and the Holocaust were not what we consider either Humane or even human. But until we admit that humans are capable of turning away from the hideous truth, we are vulnerable. We are very vulnerable when we deny.
We are powerful when we realize, on the other hand, that we can make a difference. We can undo damage because we are the ones, the only ones, which had the power to commit it in the first place. When we take back this power, when we stand up to the profiteers who live off the livelihoods of working people we will find our true strength. Corporations that are increasingly taking possession of the planet at your expense need to be charged for the externalized costs they give you. Industries charge us for products they assure us we cannot live without, and then they pass on the toxic costs of both the manufacture, and disposal of those throwaways, onto your back as well. They profit by airing lots of feel good green commercials, but that does not reflect what is happening in the fading world of the Amur leopard, and thousands upon thousands of other species. You read daily about unconscionable human suffering as well, it is all related, one loss of one resource, be it human or otherwise, affects everything, everyone else.
Why does it pay to be moral? Because we need each other. We all need appreciation, kindness, and compassion. Does morality have anything to do with sex? Well, yes actually it does. The immorality of sex is that it is used to sell everything from your prosti-tots wardrobe to the fifteen year crack whores enslaved in your city, to world domination.
Does it have anything to do with judgment? Surely the unrighteous should be judged. But not by us. When you judge, or try to legislate, morality, you are immoral. Even avowed atheists will defend that very biblical truth. Judge not, lest ye be judged.
Morality has everything to do with the best of our human gifts, and nothing whatsoever to do with trying to tell others what they cannot do. It is much better to tell, to share with others, what they CAN do. We can make a more moral world.
