What will Change Society
What action would profoundly change society?
The focus of society and the political, social, and economic system involves some form of struggle: Survival or achievement, achievement meaning to be something. These things engage fear and they orient the mind towards time; will I survive, I should be this or I should be that. These things are projections in time. In this way, they distort the mind, distort perception, concentrating thought on fear, time projections, illusions which draw the person away from what actually is, what is actually in front of him or her. This fear leads to mental and physical deterioration, conflict inside the person and conflict with other people. A person’s relationship to that society depends on where a person is coming from; is it mere survival, fear, or achievement which is his or her orientation?
Since these factors are elements of conflict and deterioration, distorting elements in a person’s life, then it would seem they are barriers to clear perception, true intelligence, direct seeing into oneself and what is around oneself. Along these lines, each person has separative identifications which contain ideology and preconceptions which make up an image; so there is no direct relationship between people or between people and environment or with the inward events of each person; there are only separative images that divert from true and direct perception. The influence of society is to compare one image and another, and to conform to preconceptions and images, ideologies and identifications.
If these divisive and distorting factors are operating, then intelligence is not operating, and society continues to disintegrate. If society does not allow for any kind of true operation of intelligence, then there will be no change in society and no physical and mental health in this society: There will be perpetual stress, there will be nothing but survival, there will be no freedom and there will be coercion to conform to the very thing which destroys the individual; and this means fear is always operating. None of these are conducive to the operation of intelligence. It must explain in part why there is no intelligence in society. Things have remained the same, by and large.
How do you get around it?
In their own lives people see that they must deal with immediate circumstances, and often the only option is to join society to do that. One might see that it is all false, violent, divisive, destructive, and a deteriorating factor, but also know that survival is the first thing. Right or wrong, this is the average person’s dilemma.
There are conditions that must be met for intelligence to operate in the individual. There must be no fear, security in both brain and body; no distorting factor at all. Consequently, most people seek this security first. For many, the best prospect in life is to find a “good” job and fall into that; people thinking this way are often the ones in the most dire of circumstances. We seek the bare essentials and are caught up in only doing that. But there is a bit of a dangerous quality to this fact; if it is only some, essentially a select few, one might say an “elite”, who can explore intelligence; this would seem to preclude a possibility for fundamental change for humanity; not to mention really leaving a lot of people in the dust, so to speak; for there will be no change in societal patterns without the operation of intelligence.
Without this operation of intelligence, society will remain the same, with its conflicts, divisions, illusions, and violence and all of the tensions that lead to deterioration in the individual and society as a whole. Now, one thing remains fundamental in regards to what creates society: I create society, each human being does; without that fundamental change in me, no other change will make a difference: Even with practicalities considered, this remains a fact. So, we can create what is, what we are is what will be.
However, what remains as fact in society is that the pattern of deterioration and distortion and inward and outward conflict seem to be on a continuum. Actions in that pattern continue that pattern.
What action would be outside of that pattern so possibly end the pattern?
Awareness, to see what is false, what is destructive, what is divisive; to discard it, not to continue it, not to cooperate with it. This would be the only action outside of the pattern of division, identifications, ideology, preconceptions, and conflict of society. It means action, true and good action, come from seeing what is; not from idea but from direct perception; to act on what is from direct perception.
And, as we said earlier, societal thought concentrates on projections of time, which divert from direct perception of what actually is; and at the base of our problem is our illusory fear of tomorrow. It’s what makes us conform, makes us make confused decisions; we are always “self-protecting” ourselves from ending, tomorrow.
The ultimate revolutionary move is to end this common movement of tomorrow.
Society is not conducive to intelligence, but it really cannot prevent it; there is not my perception or your perception, there is just perception which sees directly into what actually is; including the corruption of society. One of our errors is that we look to society and what it can do; and it can do nothing, it is too corrupt and it can take not give, can corrupt and bind not awaken or free. When we see that that society has no relationship to goodness, we are free, and intelligence operates
Insight is necessary, insight occurs outside the corruption; thought, as a divisive factor, can only add to the corruption; thought with its time binding, corrosive, terrorizing effects create more fear and division. Seeing the whole of this corruption, seeing its illusions and destructiveness, one clearly would have to step outside of it. The only thing that would keep the individual in that destructive pattern would be a return to the illusion. It is questionable whether that is even possible for someone who has had direct insight into the problem.
The mind creates problems; faced with the challenge of society, rather than seeing directly into its corruption, the mind will avoid, justify, distort reality; all the while, still connected to the corruption, creating more of the same. But having seen directly into it, action would have to occur, it is unavoidable. It would have to be a whole, profound action, not occurring within the illusion of time or image or the pattern of society: This would be a revolutionary action.
