Raised by Society are we Taught to be Morally Responsible or to be Obedient - Obedient

The steady moral decline of our society combined with the growing control over government over our lives clearly demonstrates that obedience is the preferred option when the alternative is moral responsibility. Indeed our society is quickly moving towards a state in which we alleviate all individual responsibilities entirely. Instead of accepting the responsibilities that have traditionally been placed on the privilege of citizenship we are quickly to shirk those responsibilities for the peace of mind of knowing that we do not have to suffer the consequences of our actions.

In a country dominated by the affluent and politically connected circles reminiscent of royal courts of the past it is far more politically useful to have a compliant population of obedient followers to command rather than a self righteous group of morally responsible citizens who are guided by their principles rather than their deceitful political leaders. When your leaders and power brokers shed all moral responsibility for their actions it is easy for the general populace to strive for the same level of freedom and lack of control. As a result people quickly embrace the notion of moral ambiguity which frees them from the principled behavior that a more morally centered society is governed by.

In the end the politicians are present with the ultimate present, a self loathing group of pliant and obedient voters and tax payers from which to draw on for their own personal and political gain. Like the villainous character of Calvera from the movie the Magnificent Seven who famously quipped of the peasants he tormented throughout the movie “If God didn’t want them sheared, he would not have made them sheep”, so do our politicians see us a mere sheep from which the draw upon. And any herd that is to be sheared, it is vitally important that we be an obedient lot so as not to disturb the rest of the flock and make the shepherds job a difficult one.

Gone are the days of meaningful protests and serious movements against the government. No longer do we see “million man marches” or other serious acts of defiance against a bloated and unjust government. Instead we are content to sit back and do as we are told, all the while the politicians are taking comfort in the knowledge that a population of fat, dumb and happy citizens makes for an assured reelection campaign. There is little fight left in the American people for the way of life and freedoms that made this country great. Instead we are quick to endure over taxation on every level of government and constant encroachment by an ever expanding government into every facet of our personal lives. With each new step against our personal freedoms we are comforted by the government with the loosening of our morals just a bit more.

We are too quick to trade debauchery and immorality for comfort and the perception of freedom. Sadly the more government assistance we accept and the more government programs we allowed to be instituted the less freedom we have. The larger government gets the more it costs and the less we have in our pockets at the end of the week. The fact that we are no longer forced to accept responsibility for so much of our lives or actions is little consolation for those who are struggling to put food on their table or a roof over their heads due to over taxation. Americans are struggling every day to survive while our political leaders are fed like kings, live in the lap of luxury and are rewarded more extravagantly than some third world dictators. All of this occurs thanks to our subservience and obedience.
