Money Makes the World go around - Money
At the risk of sounding greedy, I chose the “Money” side of the spectrum. As much as we would all love to have more free time, in the reality of today’s world, free time won’t pay the rent. I am a musician, writer, Zumba instructor, and student. In my life, free time is a luxury. However, I personally would rather be kept busy and obtaining as much (or little) money as I can in order to make payments, fix emergency car problems, or, on the rare occasion that I do have time to myself, reward myself with a nice shopping trip or romantic dinner with my boyfriend.
I am also a strong believer in keeping myself busy and gaining skills. I know it sounds crazy, but I really do like to be busy. I feel like when I’m busy and I finally get that rest that I deserve, it is so much more rewarding. I’m the type of person that got bored during summer breaks in grade school, when now, I appreciate them so much more because of how busy I am. I don’t get time for myself, but if I can earn a living doing what I love, then why not pursue it? Although it sounds incredibly greedy to say that one should pursue whatever brings in the money, would we be living comfortably without that mentality? Perhaps, if we knew nothing else, but unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your stance on the matter), we do know what it is like to be wealthy or at least above the poverty line. We know that we have marketable skills that could garner some money in the long run. Why not take advantage of those skills and work toward a goal instead of “enjoying” the “free time”. Perhaps you want to go on a cruise or visit family in another state. If you don’t have the funds to do so, that’s it. Game over.
The truth of the matter is, although in an idealistic world, money would be unnecessary and we could all simply enjoy life for its pleasures, the world just doesn’t run that way. Corporate America doesn’t run like that. To think that we have the opportunity for truly free time is selfish (although we could all use a little selfishness now and again). So, as much as I would love to have free time, I would rather be making money to sustain the lifestyle I’m living and be able to appreciate the free time even more once it arrives. Everything feels better when you work for it, right?
