How to Resist Overspending
It is important to resist overspending, this is especially more so, when our eyes are the gateway to our hearts where desires swirl around like thick honey pots. People tend to want to buy what they see, and that is not necessarily a bad thing, that is one way it has helped the economy recover. However, to resist overspending is something else altogether. You only resist overspending, when you have already exceeded your budget for the week or the shopping trip.
Like it or not, everyone works on a budget. For some people, that budget is strictly whatever they brought in their wallets. For others, budget is an elastic word that is pegged to the amount of money that they may have in their bank account. As long as you are spending within your means, that is essentially still fine and not a real problem. If your overspending ate into money that was set aside for another purchase, then it is back to basics of saving from scratch.
However, when the person is overspending in the sense that they are using money that they do not have now, then that will pose a real problem and a stop gap measure needs to be imposed to prevent drilling down the hole of spiraling debt. Buying on credit is a form of overspending, and is especially dangerous if the payment for that debt is based on the monthly wages at the end of the month. There is a real tendency to rely on credit over and over when there is not enough money at the end of the month to pay off the debt.
The key to resisting overspending is really to leave the credit cards at home when going out with friends for that shopping trip. Opt to instead bring along cash. This will put to mind the importance of making sure that you will eventually spend within your means. Also another way to resist overspending is to hold back from buying the first thing that you see at the shop. Instead of doing that, it is good to make a mental note of it and then go back to it when you have made your final selections. This will help you manage your expectations and help the compulsive shopper spend within the confines of the budget.
Budgeting skills apply to everyone and no one is immune to the powers of overspending, so it is natural that additional steps need to be introduced so that shopping can still be a leisurely activity, and spending your hard earned money is something that is still an option.
