Homeless in America
With the economy is the downfall that it is today, homelessness is becoming a hot topic in America. More and more people every day find themselves on the streets with no place to go. However, besides the economy there are other reasons why homelessness is becoming a growing problem.
One of the main reasons and, one of the most common, of why homelessness is becoming a growing problem is due to addiction to drugs and alcohol. Addiction can literally take over a person’s life which can lead to a variety of different social problems and as a result makes it difficult for the person to function properly. Addiction often leads to unemployment and relationship breakdowns which then lead to homelessness.
Abuse is another factor that plays a major role in homelessness. When a person is in an abusive relationship they have no other option but to leave. However, most of the time those that are fleeing abusive homes find themselves with no place to go but the streets and often times kids are involved as well. Most generally this is more commonly found in women.
There are many that are homeless due to the result of a divorce as well. When this occurs many find themselves with no place to go or do not have the finances available to seek new housing. Due to this they find themselves sleeping on the streets and the sad fact is that often times the children are with them.
Although there are shelters available across the United States they are constantly full above capacity. Another reason why many do not see the use of the shelters is that many are unaware that they are available and, where they are at. There are local agencies that can help people find shelter. Places such as Human services and more have lists of agencies that can help with the epidemic of homelesness.
These are just three of the top reasons why homelessness is on the rise today. Every day shelters across the United States are full beyond capacity with families and women and children. This trend will continue to grow as people continue to turn their heads away from the epidemic. Without the proper resources and sometimes counseling that is needed, these people will continue to be homeless. It is time that America stands up and addresses this issue; if not for America, for the 75,000 homeless people within its walls. What are you doing to help combat the homeless crisis in America today?
