Has the Introduction of Machinery done more Harm or Good
Machinery is known to have done more harm than good. Firstly, with the introduction of machinery, the rate of unemployment has extremely risen since many people lose their jobs. With machines now doing the job of people, little or no labor is required and hence the workers are facing unemployment. Due to the fact that machines do all the jobs, the craftsman also is disappearing because he has no place in the world of machines. The work is routine and monotonous causing people to find little satisfaction in the work they do. This is because the people, who once used to do all kinds of jobs and who were skilled at it, now do nothing more than handling the machines, showing that labor-saving devices do not always save labor. With the creation of new industries, small businesses suffer. It has been reported that the work done by machines is of poor quality. The countryside is also spoiled due to the use of machines which causes noise and air pollution and also affects the health of people. Stone crushers cause much pollution to the environment and machines which make unbearable noise during overtime hours prevent the surrounding people from relaxing after their long tiring day at work.
On the other hand, some good is also done by machinery. Machines can do the job of ten people at a time and even much faster. Thus working hours are reduced, leaving the people with more free time. People can choose to relax, enjoy with their children, visit the parks or enjoy the beauty of nature during the free time. With more leisure time, people are less stressed and more relaxed because their burdens of work have been considerably reduced. Leisure is important in a person’s life since it gives a person the opportunity to relax; there are no restrictions or orders placed on him. It is only due to the machines that people have more leisure. Also, machines produce more goods than man would have a certain interval of time. The fact that materials are obtained at a cheaper rate increases the production of goods for the society. Consequently, even more food is available for the people. The standard of living is improved and people enjoy a more comfortable life.
With the setting up of new industries, unemployment is reduced to some extent. More wealth is generated in society which is used for the development of infrastructures. Communications have been greatly improved since then, leading to a better life enjoyed by the people. More leisure and a better life increase the lifespan of the people and they live longer.
