Does Loyalty Pays off
You may have heard your colleagues complained about their bosses, or supervisors for not doing a good job, not being a fair person, snatching credits or simply a horrible superior that ill treats you. You may also have seen some of your colleagues telling the rest off for passing negative comments about their superiors, especially if they have a common superior.
Love is blind, but can loyalty to a company or superior be just as blind? You may wonder if such a staff still exists in this modern society, whereby retrenchment, and workplace grievances are ever so common.
Seeing is believing, and there are in actual fact employees that will have different principals from the majority.
Secretary to a boss is more likely to be a loyal staff, reason being, you have to be a willing follower if you want to be a secretary. If you cannot take orders, stop questioning your boss, or just shut-up , and do what you have been told, you will have difficulty being a secretary. Therefore, many secretaries are assets to the company. However, they may not be well liked by other colleagues because they are too close to the bosses, or would not allow them to vent their frustrations about their bosses.
To a loyal staff, they believe that everyone has to obey orders by their superiors, even if their commands are obviously bias or wrong. They do not speak up for their colleagues or caution his colleague when he knows that his boss is going to take nasty actions on his colleague. They are always on the side of the bosses or their superiors.
Such loyalty towards their superiors can be seen as blind loyalty in the eyes of the majority, who believe that employees with no complaints do not have a mind of their own. Blind loyalty can lead to complacency, and may cause you to end up with no support from either your colleagues, or your superior.
Why is there no recognition or support by your superior for your loyalty? This is the world today. If you do not have the skills set that an employer want, or your salary gets higher, while your seniority in your job increases, you are easily dispensable no matter how loyal you are. Your superior may grumble that you are just doing the mundane job, no further contribution to the company, thus you are just a dead wood employee who draws too high a salary. Your boss can get a young person to do your job, at half your salary.
Who will feel the most hurt, and frustrations from sudden lay off by the company? An employee who has believed in a superior blindly for years, and one who believes that his superior is god almighty.
If you are the loyal staff, it is your decision to be loyal to your company or superior. However, you should try to relax, and allow your colleagues to complain. Keep their grievances confidential, and not disclose your colleague’s complaints to your superiors, otherwise your colleague may name you a boot licker or may despise you. You have the right to defend your superior if you want to, but you may not want to snap at your colleagues whenever they want to complain about your superior.
