Do Bullies Change

In our society today bullies are everywhere. According to bullying statistics, 1 out of 4 kids is bullied. The American Justice Department says that this month 1 out of every 4 kids will be abused by another youth. “1 out of 5 kids admits to being a bully, or doing some “bullying.” So will bullies ever change? That’s one question that runs through my mind. Over the course of a year, more than 4,400 deaths have occurred as a result of bullies. According to the CDC for every suicide among young people, there are at least 100 suicide attempts. Over 14 percent of high school students have considered suicide, and almost 7 percent have attempted it.

Do I believe a bully would ever change? No I don’t think a bully can ever change. If a bully doesn’t take the time to realize the impact he causes to others there’s a possibility that the bully won’t change his /her ways. Why people bully now a days? Do they lack empathy or do they get pleasure out of it? Well whatever the reason is, bullies just don’t care.

According to urban dojo, bullies are heavily influenced by their family backgrounds. It’s impossible to predict who will become a bully and who won’t, but researchers have found some patterns in the types of families bullies have. North Dakota State University professor Laura DeHaan sums up the findings as follows:

“Bullies tend to come from families that are characterized as having little warmth or affection. These families also report trouble sharing their feelings and usually rate themselves as feeling less close to each other. Parents of bullies also tend to use inconsistent discipline and little monitoring of where their children are throughout the day. Sometimes parents of bullies have very punitive and rigid discipline styles, with physical punishment being very common. Bullies also report less feelings of closeness to their siblings.”

Family members can have a big influence on how the child acts. Maybe they’re domestically abused. Children now a days take their anger out on other kids. If this continues I think bullies would never change. That’s why people should step up and help prevent bullying; bullying is not right and it can affect everyone. If someone dies because of bullying don’t you think that would affect their family? Think about it; if you know someone that is a bully or a victim of bullying, please step up and say something, don’t just watch it happen.
