Choose to be happy, no matter what comes your way
Listen to the world and local news. It’s full of negativity. From destruction caused by natural disasters to political wrongdoing to acts of hatred and anger, it leaves one feeling discouraged and depressed. There you are trying to remain positive.
At work, people grumble about low pay for long hours, lack of respect and recognition by the higher-ups, as well as the game of office politics. It’s no wonder people become depressed and discouraged. Take heed. You don’t have to fall into that bandwagon. You can remain positive, but it is your choice. That’s right. It is your choice.
First thing in the morning, as the song sung by Tony Bennett says, “Grey skies are gonna clear up; put on a happy face.” Don’t allow the gloom to rule your emotions. It’s amazing how wearing a smile brings comments, compliments, conversations, but most of all, your inner happiness shines through. Give it a try. People will wonder what you are up to, and many will shoot back a smile in response.
You have control over your little corner of the world. The first rule is not to get sucked into the negative hole that devours others. Make the decision to be happy. That’s perhaps the most difficult step in turning around the negativity that surrounds your life.
When others are complaining, walk away. Unless you are in a mandatory business meeting, elect not to allow yourself to become swallowed by what you hear. If the session is required, speak with your supervisor offering suggestions as to how it could have been presented in a more stimulating and productive manner.
Arm yourself with positive statements to repeat like a mantra throughout the day, especially when you hear or see something that could be a downer. Something as simple as, “How blessed I am. All is well today.” If need be, write it down and carry it in your pocket to serve as a reminder.
People of faith begin the day with prayer. What greater assistance could one request than that of God or “universal energy”, or whatever your name is for positive energy? Feeling empowered by such energy is like resting on the beach in a resort. Peacefulness encompasses your being.
If necessary, find a quiet space. Close your eyes and meditate. Imagine that you are in your favourite place of relaxation, wherever that may be. For a minute or a few minutes, see yourself in that place, totally at peace and as comfortable as possible, surrounded by those you care about, or totally alone. Allow your body to soak in the feeling of the moment. Most likely you’ll be overcome by a lightness of being from which you won’t want to leave. That’s okay. Know that you can return to that place any time you need to. Thank your spirit for taking you there before you return to the tasks you must complete.
