Bullying

In asking the fundamental question, if a bully can ever change, one must ask if people do change or do they remain the same. Ones circumstances in life makes them what they are and a change of circumstance and new experience can drastically alter ones attitude and behavior.

In looking at this negative practice, one must examine the two types of bullying which are physical and emotional bullying both of which takes its toll on the mental state of the individual involved. This practice usually starts in the schools from a young age and is encouraged to continue when one turns a blind eye to this negative and anti-social behavior.

Some of the reasons for bullying are peer acceptance of this practice, which involves a group of persons who facilitate and encourage the behavior by allowing the dominant party who is in charge to lead the group astray and cause physical and emotional problems for others. This ability to dominate others through scare tactics and aggression is further encouraged through the rewards the perpetrator gets when the individual being terrorized conforms as does things that this terrorist requests such as giving up ones lunch or money. Depression and aggression based on the bully’s circumstance such as physical and emotional abuse at home, and violence as well, lends itself to them returning the favor on the innocent who are teased, threatening and mocked including being downright scorned.

Change is very possible though. When one tackles and annihilate the rewards the bully gets from this anti-social and often criminal behavior, through the denouncing of the practice by the authorities in the schools, who put pressure on the peer group and its leader to abolish this practice and dealing with the social and psychological issues the bullies are experiencing in their environment such as physical and sexual abuse or violence at home or in their communities, this will facilitate the beginning of change, one is hoping for.

Visiting the community or home in which these bullies grow up and speaking one on one with the parents will help to give a true picture of why their anti-social behavior persists and deep and in-depth counseling and support is in order and will go a long way to help in resolving the issue but there must be action on all fronts. These individuals must be made to know they will have support when they need it and a serious effort must be made to incorporate them into the real world where people communicate with one another in a civil manner and also feel free to disagree.
