Believing in yourself
Learning to believe does away with doubt. Although doubt is sometimes healthy, it can become a barrier to a healthy way of life. Healthy doubting is known as healthy skepticism. It keeps us from acting rashly, but when overdone, it stops people from carrying out important decisions. The first step in overcoming doubt is knowing well the subject of the action one is fearful of acting upon. Certainly jumping overboard first and then realizing one cannot swim is not the way to get over fears. The time to doubt is when the thought or problem that led to fear makes itself known.
Doubt is a fact of life people must live with and it too serves a good purpose when used as a second look objective. It prevents rashness and makes hasty eager beavers consider the consequences of their actions. Yet, at the same time, it should not overwhelm or keep them from acting on decisions that are right and just.
The next best step in overcoming doubt is learning to be true to one’s own self. Knowing personal strengths and weaknesses and with practice at deciding what actions are to be taken and accepting the consequences of that action, is what makes for strong character. Although even here doubt will creep in and hamper efforts at clear and unhampered decision making, but with practice it will be easier dealt with.
When there is little known about doubt except that it exists, the answers and ways of dealing with it must be equally general. Words such as possibilities and probabilities will be used to replace real fear and doubts that otherwise would have been spelled out. As a word doubt means there are possibilities it is useless worry and in all probability it should not even be considered.
Here, I am doubtful that I should have considered this writing topic since it offers so few conclusions. I not only have to appear to know something about doubt, I have to find ways of avoiding it when I know nothing else about it. That makes doubt a slippery slope to climb. Yet on the other hand, chasing away doubt and forging ahead is one way of letting go of it and taking that first muddy step upward.
Therefore, since it is not known upward path is slick and fraught with danger, it will be better to wear sturdy boots than a pair of sandals. The treads and spikes will allow for traction as that first step up the hill is taken. The slippery slope of doubt is becoming less slippery when we confront it and decide how to get around its fearful, but possibly useless warnings. Doubt when confronting a well organized thinker gives way to a decision to stay on firm ground and learn more about the possibility that the next road may be too steep and too slippery.
If all this smacks of nonsense so be it. It is no less so than undermining the ability one had to make good decisions as does doubt when no parameters have been given. The next doubt, however, will be easier overcome if we take the time to learn the reasoning behind its first appearance.
