Battle of the Sexes - No

Society is continually changing a hundred years ago one could have argued quite rightly that women were not treated as fairly as men and women were seen as having to stay at home and look after the home and the children and attend visits with their husbands, or so the view is created from our famous female writers such as;Anne Bronte and Jane Eyre. We weren’t there but we can read about it from fiction or non fiction as we have to remember even fictitious books such as Pride and Prejudice the authors of these classics would not have romanticised society and how men and women were viewed.

In the non fiction side of this we do see a lot of commotion from the Suffragettes who made it their life’s work for some of them to instill the right for women to have women’srights and to most of all have a participation in the vote; the most memorable Suffragette for the movement was Emily Davison who threw herself in front of,  King George the Fifths horse at the Epsom Derby. Women were eventually allowed the vote in 1928 and women’s roles were not just viewed as being in the home as a mother or as a Governess. A lot of female writers used to write under a pen name as it was not smiled upon for a Lady to be writing novels or pieces for Magazines or newspapers, which gained their pen names respect and recognition as an author.

Both Women and Men have also seen a radical change in their domestic lives; where it is not permissible for either sex to attack the other, domestic abuse is now viewed more seriously than it was and also measures have been taken so that it is safe for one to leave the other and not be afraid of making the move to leave the other.

Men and women are seen as equal in society, men are not greater than women and women are not greater than men and it is not uncommon to see both sexes holding the doors open for one another not just a man holding open a door for a woman any more, men and women also have the same jobs in society such as Sales Assistants or Nurses or Bar work. Jobs are no longer viewed as a male or female stigmatised role and by law employers must give a valid reason for refusing to give one or the other a job based on their sex such as Care Work positions as a lot of Senior Citizens wish that their dignity be respected and do not always want the opposite sex to be bathing them and clothing them etc.

Also it is not uncommon for Men to be a stay at home Husband or Father and the woman go out to work; whether it be because of redundancy or just that the Woman has a Career and the Husband was quite happy to stay at home and look after the children, it is also not uncommon to see Men carrying out domestic chores or Sons helping their Parents around the house with domestic chores. When a Woman stays at home and her Husband goes to work it is not now viewed as that is the Woman’s role but that is the arrangement that the couple have made and what fits around their lifestyle and their home.

It could also be argued that it comes down to class in Society; for instance the Woman could stay at home and not necessarily be staying at home because this is what is expected but because their Husband has a high powered job which means that two incomes are not necessaryfor their household’sfinancial needs or the Husband stays at home as his Wife has a high powered job.

But couples have found that sometimes it is needed for both to go out to work for the household finances to be met or just to support their lifestyle; also both Men and Women go out to work when they become of working age and have left their Educational Institution whether it be School, College’s University; as Parents want some form of rent or young Men and Women are ready to get involved with the real world made of commitments and responsibilities. But it will not be seen that young people refuse to go out to work because their sex stereotype says that they have to stay at home, usually it is because their is not enough Employment widely available as there are so many people going out to work and needing money and their are not enough jobs to support the people who want or need Employment; this was seen Post War when Men were returning home from the War and found their jobs taken on by Women in their absence and since both Men and Women have had a role to play in the Employment are of society.

If the right research is taken then you will find that Men and Women are both seen as equal in today’s Society and stereotypes have become a thing of the past.
