7 Ways to be a better Citizen
Everyone around us has a role to play in the world around us. It takes everyone working together to make a successful community and nation. There are several ways that all of us can be better citizens and help improve the world around us.
Responsibility
In order to be a good person and citizen it is important that we take responsibility for our actions. It is easy to blame others when things go wrong or pass the blame about poor choices that we make. However responsibility is a critical component of character. If more people took responsibility for their actions then the world would be a much better place. Being accountable on a personal level from all citizens would strengthen the fabric of our society. We have an obligation to be responsible for our actions not only for the betterment of the world around us our individual character and self development as well.
Community Service
Getting involved in the community is a great way to give back. We are all part of the community in which we live and service helps strengthen it. Everyone has benefited from their community and nation in some way so why not give back and help make it a better place. Imagine how much better the world around us would be if every person gave back to the communities in which they live. The need for massive government programs would decline and a sense of belonging and pride in the places where we live would grow.
Respect others rights
No two people are going to see the world the same way but one person cannot trample the rights of other to secure more themselves. We all have the same worth and rights as people. In order for a democratic society to function the rights of all must be protected and respected. The great thing about America is the majority rules while securing the rights of the minority and that includes their right to speak and engage in activities we may not agree with. Liberty and justice for all is a motto our society is built upon and it is steeped in a deep respect for the rights of others.
Be honest
All true meaningful relationships are built on trust. As a result we must be honest in our dealings with others. Being honest fosters better relationships on a family and personal level which then translates to a stronger community and nation as a whole. Honesty from all people from the average person to political leaders is vital for a strong healthy society. The loss of honesty leads to a loss of faith in those around us which creates distrust and a host of other problems.
Obey the laws
The United States has always been a nation of laws and those laws are the building blocks for our society. As a result it is important to adhere to the laws of the land. The United States is a nation ruled by the people and that only worked if people are willing to obey the laws and respect the system. Once people loose respect for the laws and flaunt them it erodes the fabric of society. If all people followed the laws then all citizens would be able to equally enjoy the fruits of liberty.
Take care of the world around you
We have an obligation to future generations to leave a world that is better than the one we have. Trashing the environment and treating things without regard for the impact is selfish behavior that undermines society as a whole. We all have to live on the planet and being good stewards of the Earth ensures that the future generations have the resources needed to sustain themselves. We all impact the world around us with a little effort we can hopefully minimize the damage we cause.
Be informed
Living in a society with such liberty is a blessing but it also comes with a responsibility to be informed. All people have a say and making informed decisions about issues helps issues that the best possible decisions will be made. People will disagree about issues and that is good. Healthy informed debate and discussion allows for us to come up with better solutions to the complex issues that often arise. The more informed the public is the healthier the republic will be.
