Punk Rock

How can you tell someone how to be punk rock? It would be the same as telling someone how to see. A lot of people think they know punk, when, in reality, they no nothing of it. Being a punk isn’t listening to certain music. It isn’t dressing a certain way. And, it definitely doesn’t mean that you have to buck everything our society represents. Punk was more than a type of music or a style of clothes to wear. It was a lifestyle. I am speaking in past tense about punk because it is most certainly dead. And, as much as I detest what its ideals are now being interpreted as, it only further proves my point.

Have you ever walked into a mall and looked at the group of kids standing together being out of control, wearing outrageous clothes, and wearing makeup? I know every single person reading this article has, at one time or another, seen that group. They epitomize all of my disgust for today’s culture. Music today is largely at fault for the failure of the trends and scenes of today. No one writes music. They write songs if you catch my drift. Music is supposed to be a platform where you can speak your mind and share your emotions. People develop an attachment to music and musicians. Today, the songs written are all about money, complaining, and hate.

People think that punk music inspired the punk scene. For that, they are dead wrong. Punks were not people who were inspired by music, but were tired of social things and events going on. They wanted a platform to get their voice out. They did that. Bands like the Clash, The Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, the Ramones, and Rancid were the defining voice for this culture. They made music that spoke to people and inspired them. So called punk music today is retards playing the power chords and writing about nothing. There is no inspiration behind their music. They dress the part but don’t act it out.

Punk wasn’t around to buck society. It was there to try to reform it based on ideals. Punks were the common man’s politicians. They spoke with a voice that wasn’t heard in courts or in washington. It was a street movement much like the old days. Get your voice heard and make it sound good to music. People misconstrued what it was to be a punk over the years because they idolized the problems that came from being involved in that scene. The problems came like they would in any scene when you become too involved.

Today, society makes me sick. They want more to look a part than to be a part of something. Everyone wants a handout. It’s not cool to get your voice heard because you may offend someone. That’s a load of bullshit. That is the very reason that the world is in the state that it is. Too many people look the part, but sit by and do nothing. If you aren’t going to help, get out of the way. Otherwise, be somebody. Don’t just look like something.
