Introverts alone Isolated Social Gatherings Idle Chats Socially Awkward Societal Norms

Society and all its expectations can be difficult for introverts.  Those who thrive on being alone and in fact, prefer to work, eat and live alone, can sometimes find themselves convincing those around them that there’s nothing wrong with their way of life.   Introverts can easily differentiate alone and lonely, despite the many misconceptions.   The biggest difficulty many introverts have is making those around them see that while they live a solitary life, they’re not isolated nor are they prisoners in their own homes.

It quickly becomes exhausting and overwhelming when an introvert is expected to attend social gatherings; the holidays are always wonderful and most look forward to spending time with family and friends.  That said, it’s usually the introvert who makes the first graceful exit.  It has nothing to do with not wanting to spend time with relatives or an attempt to be rude; it simply comes down to the level of stimulation encountered. For an introvert, a little goes a long way.

Another survival tip the introvert incorporates is turning the ringer off on the phone.  Those who love and care for their introvert get it; they understand it’s just part of the nature.  Still, the introvert makes it a priority to not let those important calls go unacknowledged.  It’s those drawn out idle chats that drive them a bit crazy, but calls from family and close friends are always important.

Many introverts choose to remain single.  Some insist marriage or other serious romantic relationships are too draining and some have even said it’s intrusive.  Those who do decide to open their lives to allow another in know there are concessions they will have to make, and usually, they’re major concessions.  They know they must re-shift priorities, but you can be sure these decisions aren’t made lightly and only if they’re certain they can successfully pull it off.

Finally, it’s important to understand introverts are not socially awkward, they’re not hiding within the walls of their homes and they’re not depressed.  They’re simply living their lives by their own rules. They cherish their lifestyles, take comfort in knowing they can do their grocery shopping at three a.m. or have cereal for dinner.  They don’t mind going to a restaurant alone and never feel guilty for spending an entire Saturday watching Law & Order marathons.  It truly comes down to making a decision to go against the societal norms.
