How the Automobile has Changed American Society
Without cars Americans would be lost
The effect the automobile has had on American society can’t be summed up in a short 400 word article. But this article will give a short synopsis, of what the History Channel does over a week’s worth of shows an hour in length, including commercials.
The automobile was invented in the late 1800’s by either Henry Ford, or Karl Benz. The debate rages today on exactly who invented the automobile. Many different people were working on creating a car, in different countries, and it depended who got his patent okayed first. Although according to the History Channel when Henry Ford started making cars that German Engineer, Karl Benz first invented, Ford invented the process of how products including cars were made.
He invented the assembly line, which was a faster method of making almost everything that Americans had been making at a much slower pace, usually by hand standing in one place all day. According to he History Channel cars were beginning to be mass produced in the very early 1900’s.
Once the car was invented, it completely changed life as we Americans knew it. Before the car, people would travel in horse carriages, they would walk or ride bikes. People would have to travel in boats, or trains to get from city to city. Today, people hop in a car and travel from one city to another in a matter of a few short hours.
The automobile has made it easy, and convenient to travel from one city to another. Americans have access to inexpensive travel from one state to another. Americans venture out on the highway to go on vacation trips, work trips, visiting friends, relatives, new cities, and to go camping, People have a natural curiosity and with the invention of the automobile, we can satisfy that urge to discover new things.
American Society has changed due to the creation of the car. No longer held hostage at home, people could get out and see not only each other, but go into town to go shopping, and visit friends. Before, the invention of the car, Americans would have to entirely rely on themselves. People grew their own crops, made their own clothes, and lived with their relatives in the same homes. Children were schooled at home or at a nearby school.The mainstay of life was due to farming.Today, parents commute to work every day, some hundreds of miles in search of the all-mighty dollar. Millions of people travel to far away cities in an automobile every day, or live in another city to make money.
The effect of the automobile on American society has created a nation of people dependent on the car. People use cars to do everything today. We drive in our autos to go shopping, visit friends and relatives, run errands, go to children’s activities, and to acquire our entertainment. Sometimes people just go for drives to get out of the house.
The automobile effects America by creating millions of jobs every year; from the construction workers, toiling away building new highways, to roadside businesses, such as motels, hotels, restaurants, fruit stands, and to people who drive for a living. Without the creation of the automobile, there would not be trucks to bring goods to towns and cities. There would not be buses , moving people around to schools, activities, to jobs, and on entertaining trips.
Americans are more worldly, due to the automobile. Without it’s creation, we would not know what other cities in America look like, unless we travel by foot, or by horse.Travel time has been cut into minute fractions, by the automobile. Amercans travel cheaper, faster, and farther than ever before.
Without our automobiles, Americans would be lost.
