Defining Rahs who are they
So what is a Rah?
A Rah (otherwise known as a Sloane or Ra), is an individual who in America might be known as a ‘preppy’ individual. This style has been very quickly adopted in the UK and Britain, particularly with university students, in universities such as Exeter, Durham, Bristol, York, Edinburgh, Oxford, and Cambridge. It also has caught on strongly with students in private and public schools, such as Eton, Rugby, Uppingham, Wycombe Abbey, Charterhouse and so on.
Rahs are easily identifiable. Some key pointers to noting them are:
-Gilets
-Shirts
-Baggy tracksuit bottoms
-Long, unkempt hair
-Rugby Tops
-Ugg Boots
-Upturned collars
-Clothes from shops such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Jack Wills, Hollister, Polistas and American Eagle.
Often, Rahs associate themselves with a certain group of sporting activities including Polo, Rugby Union, Lacrosse, Croquet, Cricket, Sailing and Shooting. Such a choice of activities may have arisen from most traditional Rahs coming from wealthy, upper class backgrounds.
The term ‘Rah’ not only describes appearance and activities but also the attitudes of individuals. Rahs are often known for being somewhat arrogant and stuck up, even though this is not always the case. Such a view towards these individuals normally arises due to the backgrounds and upbringings of most Rahs.
Furthermore, it can be argued that the vast majority of Rahs have conservative beliefs, supporting traditional activities such as Fox Hunting in the UK, and may well be members of groups such as the Countryside Alliance.
In terms of music, Rahs tend to listen to indie styled music such as We Are Scientists, Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This taste in music is common with most Rahs, but of course being ‘Rah’ is more about the appearance and attitude rather than music taste and therefore this does vary.
Clearly, a ‘Rah’ is identified by clothing, lifestyle, upbringing and activities. When an individual has such attributes, they are on their way to becoming a Rah, or Sloane Ranger as they are becoming known as across the UK. If you want to see one, take a look in any Jack Wills or Abercrombie and Fitch Store and it will be made obvious what exactly a Rah is.
