Can Goths be Christian
In Nomine Pater et Fili et Spirtu Sancti….
Christian goth subculture in a nutshell is based on music and songs sung in the style of E-Nomine and other “neo-latin metal” bands… They may or may not dress in sweaters with hoodies and pouches on the belly to hide their hands… Typically more reflective spiritually speaking and generally love songs of the traditional prayers and credes such as the Lords Prayer and Apostles` Crede in various europeopan languages, particularly German and Latin.
Such songs include; Vater Unser, Der herr der schatten, Mitternacht, Exitus… etc.
I myself listen to this style of music when working nights to remind myself of Christ`s presence with me in the darkness that I walk constantly. Which is probably why I see how such dark themes are apropriate for christian songs and I actually applaud these bands for making the gospel relevant to the generation of today, in particular the youth that are susceptible to general goth to begin with.
Since someone who is goth anyway already sees the “dark and bleak” of the world we live in and sees that darkness, typically, as a refuge from the harshness of society; why not suggest the idea that even in their darkest, most solitary hole, Christ can still wrap his arm around them for comfort.
Then we must remember that most goth themselves have and use simbols, writings and archetectures dating back to mideaval christendom. These include crosses (typically the celtic ones), knives and daggers, clothes and other jewelry.
Saddly mainstream people, and especially the conservative minded Christians are afraid of goth because they wear black therefore must be “evil”… To these I have one thing to say that might refute this argument; “my favorite Johnny Cash song has always been ‘the man in black’.
The color black is to me a reminder that Christ`s kingdom is not yet come, so we keep vigil, wait and prepare for the day when He returns because we do not know the hour nor day. Like the lyrics to Mister Mister`s Kyrié, “Kyrié éleison (Lord have mercy) in the darkness of the night, Kyrié éleison on the road that I must travel”, the color black in Christian goth also reminds us that; although we are with Christ and His light, there is still so much darkness in the world today as there has always been from the time of the Fall until the New Eden where there will be no more darkness or suffering.
