Immigration History us History American Indian Chinese Manifest Destiny

For American Indian people the expansion of the Great west meant that they were going to lose their homes and way of life by being forced into fitting the American “Dream” of Manifest Destiny. American Indian people were forced out of their lifestyle by violence, brutal force and manipulation by the United States Government.

Chinese Immigrants provided an opportunity to open up the west by building the transcontinental Railroad (90% employment by Chinese immigrants,) on top of working on the railroad the chinese provided a lot of cheap labor and hard work for white business owners. Chinese also invented China towns, Laundries, and had festivals (fireworks) The Chinese cut a lot of Union jobs because they were willing to do the same jobs as white settlers for less pay, so resentment had built up from the white americans for the chinese which they were starting to get violent expressing their frustrations about chinese immigrants. This is why the Chinese exclusion Act was created, by creating this act and enforcing it The United States Government broke the very constitution that they created by passing laws based on biased opinions and judging people by the color of their skin. The Chinese were not treated as equal citizens.

The American Indians had willingly surrendered and were compliant with the U.S. Government, however one of the tribesmen was deaf and did not understand the order to disarm, so then hundreds of Lakota Indians were massacred and many fled and later died of hypothermia. The Ghost Dance was a religious outlet for Native American people. The Ghost Dance was believed to revive loved ones that had died, and help to replenish the earth. It has been around for centuries. The Dawes Act stated that each Native American should get land which they don’t have to pay for, and that the can also pick out, it is up to the head of the household what they want for minor children. Also, the Dawes Act made it so American Indians were citizens of the United States. The ending result of the Dawes act was that Native Americans lost even more land because it was not good land to grow on, and so it was being sold to White Americans to make money. They lost almost 100 million acres of land. I think that Native American people at the time were taken for granted and tricked and coerced into any agreements that they made with the United States at that time.
