African American Representation in the Media

The label African American itself is the biggest insult to people of Negro descent and is indicative of the medias scant regard for the integrity and well being of a people.

I do not know who came up with the idea for this label but the media, and by media i mean radio, television, internet broadcast, music and films have ran with it and in the process has continued to label ,stereotype and stigmatized people or persons that are just a part of the human family.

The media for years have practiced a policy of attachment to black people, which means that THE BLACK MANS ACHIEVEMENT HAVE ALWAYS BEING COUPLED WITH HIS RACIAL MAKEUP. Common place is a phrase which goes like “so and so is the first Black man to sit on the bench of the Supreme court” and more recently “so and so is the first African American to head so and so fortune five hundred company”. There is no such announcement made with relations to most people of other races. It is just like saying “we let the monkey out of the cage and look how far he has climbed.

A successful individual of a particular race applies principles of success such as persistence, hard work, dedication and so forth just the same as any member of another race and it as nothing to do with color but everything to do with character. So the question must be asked why does the media continue this shameful practice of singling out a man by race when he achieves something.

If there is a documentary on drugs, prison ,prostitution and skulduggery the black man is automatically the lead faces paraded in front of the audience. The movie business also need to explain why Hollywood’s finest black talent keep on winning Oscars for portrayals of corrupt cops, cannibalistic dictators and chauffeur drivers instead of more noble characters.

The enemy oftentimes are within as recently in the case where the anointed “Queen of the Media” Oprah Winfrey brought to task hip hop artist and black record company executives for there use of slum language in music which are “degrading to women”, but the billionaire media mogul have never extended the same courtesies to white rock singers preaching Satanism .Hows that for media representation when the richest black woman perpetuates the Caucasian stereotype of her own people.

Back to the top though the term African American is not to be used unless it is applied across the board to German, Polish, West Indian, Chinese or wherever you come from American.

Is the black man African American and the rest of us simply American? Maybe someone can explain this to me but the medias representation of the black man is rooted in the European model of stereotype and stigmatization and that the way I see it.
