Urban Subcultures in Asia Making Cultural Statements with Clothing
Some of us aren’t satisfied with being just like everyone else. Who wants to wear the same denim skirts and tank tops as every other girl in Singapore, or wear the slouchy tshirts and jeans that the guys tends to favor? Sub-culture dressing has been on the rise in Singapore in the recent years, with events held just to celebrate the prescence and popularity of subculture movements. Some of you may have been wondering where all these people manage to find their subculture outfits, and perhaps also were wondering if you too could buy an item or two to hype up your wardrobe. Finding subculture fashion isn’t difficult; it just takes a little information.
Atsuki:
Located on the third floor of Suntec city, in the “My playground” area, Atsuki is one of the most well-stocked and conveniently located sub-culture stores in Singapore. Featuring a variety of sub-culture outfits, from Lolita, to Gothic to punk, Atsuki constantly restocks, in order to cater to the demands of its consumers. It tends to have sales during festive periods as well, which is a definitely treat for its customers. Outfits have been known to be reasonably priced, between 50 to 100 dollars for tops or bottoms, and 100-150 for most dresses.
Haru:
One of the more publicized sub-culture outlets in Singapore, Haru is located in Far East Plaza, one of the teen hubs in the Orchard road area. Mostly featuring Lolita fashion, Haru also stocks a few choice pieces of branded Japanese punk outfits. Recently branching into the Cosplay line, Haru takes orders for tailoring of Cosplay costumes, as well as stocks several of the pieces in its store. In terms of quality, there have been mixed reviews about Haru’s products, some complaining about low quality workmanship and materials. For those seeking out sweet Lolita however, Haru is probably worth a visit, if not for dresses, then at least for coordinates.
Athena:
Similar to Haru, Athena is located in Far East Plaza, but unlike Haru, it focuses more on punk and gothic clothing. Athena is known for unique darker subculture pieces, although it is far less publicized than the first two stores. Its quality is reputed to be quite good moreover, although the prices are said to reflect the quality. If you are looking for punk or gothic coordinates, Athena is likely one of your best bets, other than Atsuki.
Black Alice:
Black Alice is unique among the rest of the subculture outlets, in that it provides branded and high quality Lolita products, instead of replicas produced in China. The licensed importer of Baby the stars shine bright products, Black Alice is located in the Bugis area, in a building called Red Dot. With a pretty store-front and excellent service, Black Alice brands itself as a higher class, good quality provider of Lolita fashion. The outfits and accessories are rather costly though, with dresses costing up to the several hundreds and accessories such as socks running up to around 40 dollars.
