Travel around the globe for spring festivals

After the cold winter months, spring is a welcome change of pace. The temperatures are warmer and the earth comes alive with beautiful colors. After a long winter nap, flowers bloom and animals venture out with their young.

This very special time of year is celebrated with festivals in many parts of the world. These festivals are often colorful and steeped in the traditions of the region. Celebrations of this magnitude are a wonderful site to behold and worth a trip around the globe.

United States

One of the biggest springtime celebrations in the United States is Easter egg hunting. This is showcased during the Easter Egg Roll, held on the White House lawn. This festival has taken place almost every year for 136 years. The Egg Roll began in 1878 with President Hayes. Local Washington DC children would gather on the White House south lawn and roll their eggs.

This has become one of the biggest events held each year at the White House. It has grown to include live music, entertainment and food. The Easter Egg Roll promotes healthy and fun activities for children ages thirteen and under. There is a ticket lottery held each year to decide who will attend this grand event.

Thailand

In Thailand one of the festivals celebrated is Songkran, the Thai New Year. This festival includes parades and water fights! Who wouldn’t love to have a water fight? The water festival is a very big (and famous) part of the Thai New Year celebration. Along with the water fights, you can enjoy street foods and traditional performances.

Another facet of Songkran is spending time with family. Many Thai people will travel home to be with older relatives. This is in observance of family appreciation.

This annual event generally takes place between April 13th and April 16th. Some areas extend their celebrations a bit. Mark these dates on your calendar if you are planning a trip to Thailand. If you have always wanted to visit Thailand, Songkran might just be the perfect time to go.

India

To celebrate spring’s beautiful colors in India, the Hindu Holi festival is held. This colorful celebration takes place in either February or March and involves spraying each other with colored water or powders. Sounds like a lot of fun!

Holi has everything you want in a festival. From the celebration of good over evil to fine foods to getting to hose your friends and family members down with colored water. The Holi festival has even found its way to other parts of the world like Canada.

Bosnia

To celebrate the onset of spring, Cimburijada is the way to go. This is the festival of scrambled eggs. Locals of the town of Zenica gather by the Bosna river and prepare, share and eat scrambled eggs.

This is a spring festival a lot of people might really like. After all, eggs are a big part of springtime in many cultures. Besides that, the spirit of this celebration is one of sharing and that is one of the best reasons to celebrate.

Whether in your backyard or a vacation destination, spring festivals are everywhere this time of year. The next time you plan a vacation, or happen to be traveling for business, consider attending a spring festival while in the area. It is guaranteed to be the stuff memories are made of.

The people of the above-mentioned regions know how to welcome the season of new life. Many festivals stem from ancient beliefs and stories passed from generation to generation. From colorful costumes and decorations to food and entertainment, spring festivals are a joyous occasion.
