The Question of African Unity
I cant speak of Africa the continent as I have only lived in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The problems begin in our own countries. If we can face our problems at home, then only can we deal with the problems outside our domain.
There are so many different cultures and beliefs. We have to learn to understand that our way is not the only way to life. I am a white South African learning to be black. I am trying to learn Zulu at the moment. I get so much help from the black community. They are so happy when I answer their greeting in Zulu.
I couldn’t understand how there mother passed away twice, and asked why they had two mothers. I was told by my friend that all the sisters of her mother were her mothers as well. The father’s brothers were her fathers too.
Some tribes believe in ancestry. When a man takes a wife, a goat is offered to the ancestors passed on to the other world. The man introduces his future wife to them. She does likewise.
Unity is one. Living as one. It is possible. We have to leave the old ways and start a new era of peace and tranquility. The big question is how? I believe the answer lies within each individual. Acceptance, forgiveness and communication.Without the three there can be no unity.
There is so much to learn. It helps in the understanding of our fellow South Africans. In our estate I am known to all by my first name to young and old alike. We respect each other and have formed friendships. We laugh and joke. I mention in this article ‘color’ but I don’t see color I see people. I see my friends.
