Thailand Superstitions
Like their western counterparts, the eastern countries have some seriously bizarre, yet possibly explainable superstitions that many still believe to this day. Some may seem quite odd but then most of us still believe a black cat crossing our paths is bad luck so don’t be too hard on them.
1)Do not bend down and look between your legs. You will see a ghost. Well that’s just silly… or is it? See, if you were to bend over and look between your legs, then the person standing behind you may catch a glimpse of your little ray of sunshine which could cause them to have an unnecessary heart attack. Voila. Ghost.
2)Do not sweep dirt out of the front entrance. It will make all your money go away. It most certainly will. Especially if you leave your cash on the floor.
3)Do not sweep at night. It is bad luck. I am of the firm belief that it’s bad luck to sweep at anytime. Ever. Sweeping is an unnatural movement of the shoulders that results in serious injury. Stick to vacuuming.
4)Do not clean the spider web at night. You will lose all your money. If the web belongs to a spider that happens to be house proud and you don’t happen to see this spider come out to defend its property. Doctor’s bills are not cheap you know..
5)Do not open an umbrella in the house. It will make you bald. Yep… this one’s got me stumped too
6)Do not eat candy that has dropped on the floor. It now belongs to the ghost. Now there are two possible logical origins for this superstition. One could be mom trying to prevent her little ones from contracting potentially harmful viruses from eating food from the floor or it could have been another, quite greedy little child, who just wanted that candy for himself.
7)Do not put valuable things away at night. The ghost will see and steal it. Quite possibly not a ghost in this instance. After all Thai jails are just as over crowded as the ones in western society. Have you not heard of hidden in plain sight?
8)Do not keep broken Buddha images in the house. It will cause your family to be separated. This would be one of those religious ones. Having the broken Buddha could be viewed as being disrespectful. Either that or it was made up by the door to door Buddha salesman.
9)Do not tell other people about your bad dream when you are eating. If you do it will come true. Don’t know about the dream coming true but I have heard a few bad dreams that could cause people to lose their appetite.
10)Do not enter a house through the window. Bad luck will come to that house. Especially if that window happens to be closed. Broken glass is bad luck in my books too.
11)Do not allow wedding guests to break any plates or glasses. It will cause the couple to become separated. Well I suppose that’s one way of keeping the drunken wedding guests under control. Who’d want to be responsible for breaking up the happy couple?
See, it’s quite logical really.
