Honduras is a beautiful country located in the middle of Central America. It is known for its lush rain forests and rich heritage. Following are some interesting facts about this country.

Sports: The people of Honduras love their soccer (called football). Soccer is by far, the most popular sport in the country. The Honduran national team regularly plays in international tournaments and generally fares well. Other popular sports include baseball and tennis. Hondurans are one of the few Latin American people to follow American Football.

Cuisine: Honduran people eat much of the same foods as either Americans or Mexicans. Hondurans, however commonly eat beans and tortillas for breakfast. A popular dish is the ceviche, a mix of raw fish, shrimp, onions, tomatoes and cilantro, marinated in lime juice.

Transportation: This small country has 108 functional airports, however only 12 have a paved airstrip. Honduras has more airports than Egypt, which has more than 10 times the population.

Ancient history: Honduras was a key area of the Mayan civilization and ancient Mayan ruins can be found throughout the country. The city of Copan is called the Paris of ancient Maya because of its well preserved Mayan structures.

World War 2: Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, Honduras joined the war on the side of the Allies. However, Honduras did not actively participate militarily.

Tourism: The country offers much to the tourist. It has lush rain forests, Mayan ruins, mountain trails and beautiful beaches. It also has the second largest corral reef in the world. The country provides many activities such as ecotourism, exploration, river rafting and swimming.

Geography: While Honduras borders both the Pacific and the Caribbean, its Caribbean coast is about 20 times longer than its Pacific coast. The Caribbean is to the west, but because of the curvature of Central America, it is actually Honduras’ northern border. The interior of the country is primarily lush mountainous rain forest.

People: More that 90% of the people are Mestizo (a mix of Native Americans and European settlers). Most of the rest are descendent from the Native American population.

Communications: Less than one in nine people have a landline phone. However, almost everyone has a cell phone and most people communicate by wireless devices.

Honduras is a beautiful land with a rich heritage and proud culture and it has much to offer visitors. Everything from ecotourism, beautiful beaches and modern vacation resorts are available to the tourist. It is slowly increasing in popularity as a vacation spot.
