Celtic Symbol Triquetra
The triquetra is a symbol recognized by many cultures and religions. While the three-cornered shape can be seen in traditions ranging from pagans to Christianity, it is most commonly seen in Celtic art. Even rune stones, along with wooden and stone carvings throughout Northern Europe display this ancient symbol.
The formation of the triquetra symbol is three interlocking, identical shapes. The ancient Celts and many other pre-Christian Europeans associated the number three with femininity. It was a sign of the Goddess. Generally, it was seen that women have three stages in life. The first stage is known as the young “Virgin”. This would be a girl, pre-menarche. After a woman moves from this young Maiden stage, she moves into the “Mother” years. This is the time when the woman bears children. Once past the “Mother” years, a woman enters the “Crone” stage. In this stage, a woman is honored for her wisdom. These three stages symbolize life, death, and rebirth. The triquetra is just one symbol of the “power of three” in Pagan symbols.
The triquetra can also be found in Christianity as a symbol for the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is made up of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three beings represent a power, honor, and glory that are indivisible and equal. A Christian triquetra is often made with three interlocking mandorlas. These almond shapes are formed by the vesica piscis. During a time when Christians were persecuted, this shape became a valuable symbol. Often, when two people met, they knew it was safe to speak if one person drew half of the fish symbol and the other person completed the symbol.
The triquetra even found its way into Pop Culture. This symbol became more popular due to the television show, “Charmed.” It was featured on the “Book of Shadows” often used in the show as well as on the cat’s collar. It can also be found on the Dungeons and Dragons game cover, Forgotten Realms Campaign. Even musicians have features the triquetra on their album covers. Led Zepplin displayed it as one of four symbols on “Led Zeppelin IV.” Payable on Death (P.O.D) has featured it on many of their album covers.
This symbol is widely seen today in art and pop culture. It is not uncommon to see a person sporting a triquetra tattoo. The triquetra generally symbolizes faith. It is the power of three acting as one.
