An Introduction to Folklore in Egyptian Culture

Folklore in Egypt is a collection of ancient arts, stories, tales and legends. Flowers are a very important part of the ancient Egyptian culture and mythology. Flowers in Egypt still remain a very important part of the country’s modern day culture. There is a very large museum that is dedicated to flowers and their history in Egypt. In fact, it was the Ancient Egyptians that considered flower arrangements to be an form of art. The ancient people used flowers as a part of explaining the world around them. During ancient times, Egypt had many sacred plants and most of these plants are still grown today. According to ancient Egyptian folklore, the sun was born from a lotus flower.

Egyptians made tea from the hibiscus flower and believed it was the drink of the gods. Flowers were always a part of Egyptian funeral ceremonies. It was blue and green flowers that were used in Egyptian funeral ceremonies. When the Egyptians offerred gifts to their gods, it was dead flowers. Many Egyptians believed that the acacia tree was the mystical tree of life to them. They also believed that many gods sprang forth from the acacia tree. The Egyptians also used the acacia tree to build boats.

Egyptian folklore was rarely written down. That is because the tales originated in the rural parts of Egypt where it was common for the people to be illiterate. Egyptian fairy tales were also told. The Cinderella story we know of today, was told in original ancient version during ancient times. It was called Rhodopis, which means the “red cheeked.”

Folklore in Egypt was associated with Ramadan. The unique symbol for Ramadan has been passed from generation to generation and today, it is associated with Egyptian children. The lanterns were used to light houses, mosques, and for decorating purposes. Even folktales about the pyramids still live on today. They also believed in dreams and some dreams were so frightening that they would feel that the end of the world was near.

It is still the Great Pyramids from Egypt that spurs the imaginations today. Great tombs that hold the gifts of dreams and mystery. Some folklore tells if you open an Egyptian tomb, then death will find you. This folklore has been heard all over the world in today’s modern times. It is called the death curse.

The myths of all people are just anxious attempts for them to try to explain the world in which they live. The Prince and the Sphinx is a story when the king promised to do a favor for the Great Sphinx of Giza. Folklore in Egypt are stories that people all across the world have heard about. In learning of these stories they do seem like they can be real. During the times the stories happened, they were real, but to us these tales are many worlds away.

Ancient times, ancient people, superstitious beliefs, gods, tales, stories, legends, and religions all make part of a unique culture and heritages that are passed on for centuries. Many of them are just as true as if you were to record the events happening in your life and a thousand years from now someone finds the recording and tells the story of your life.
