Achilles

Achilles is a Greek hero of the Trojan War, and was the main character of Homers The Iliad. He was invincible in all his body except for his heals. He was a fierce warrior and one of Greek mythologies greatest fighters.

He is the son of the nymph Thetis and the king of the myrmidons, Peleus. When Achilles was a baby his mother, Thetis, tried to make him invincible by dipping him in the river Styx. All but his heal was invulnerable. The reason his heal was vulnerable was because Thetis held his heal and it didn’t go into the river.

When Achilles was an adult he fought in the Trojan War, which made him famous to this day. One of the most famous stories of Achilles in the Trojan War is Homor’s The Iliad. The Iliad only covers a few weeds of the war, and does not cover Achilles death. The Iliad starts with Achilles refusing to fight because Agamemnon, the commander of the army, dishonored hem. Agamemnon took Chryses, a priest of Apollo, daughter. When Chryses asked for his daughter back Agamemnon refused, so Apollo sent a plague to the Greeks. A prophet, Calchus, went to Agamemnon and told him to return the priest his daughter. So Agamemnon returned the priest his daughter. Then he took Achilles’ battle prize, Briseis. Achilles was enraged by Agamemnon’s dishonor, because Achilles loved Briseis. So Achilles refused to fight because of that. After Achilles stopped fighting the Trojans started pushing the Greeks back to the beach. So Agamemnon sent Odysseus and two other chieftains to Achilles to give Bresies back to him. He took her back but still refused to fight. So Patroclus, Achilles close friend, led the Myrmidons into battle, and pushed the Trojans back. Patroclus got into a fight with Hector, the leader of the Trojan army, and was killed. After Achilles heard of Patroclus death he was enraged and went on a hunt for Hector. He killed many people on his hunt for Hector. When he found Hector he killed him and tied his body to his chariot and dragged him around for nine days. After that Priam, Hector’s father, Went to Achilles asking for the body of his son. Achilles gave Priam his son’s body and he held a funeral for his son. That is where The Iliad ends.

After Patroclus died Achilles became close friends with Antilochus. Memnon, not Agamemnon killed Antilochus, Achilles wanted revenge so he went after Memnon. The fight between the two was bigger than the fight between Achilles and Hector because Memnon was to son of a goddess unlike Hector who had a mortal mother. After the fight Achilles was killed by Pairis, the brother of Hector. Paris killed him with an arrow that hit his heal, the only vulnerable spot on his body.

The myth of Achilles has been around for thousands of years and will be around for a thousand more. He was one of Greece’s most powerful warriors, and he will be remembered for a long time.
