A Living History the Powwow

A Native American powwow is an opportunity to immerse yourself into a warm and welcoming culture. You will be able to learn about their beliefs, forefathers, and customs. You will eat their food, see their native dress and competitions. You will hear their languages and their music. You will be invited and welcomed to participate in the round dances. Most people, no matter their background and heritage, will return to powwows over and over. It is a growing experience and every time there is more to learn and enjoy.

There is an arena director that keeps the powwow moving and on track. This person is truly the one in charge. He makes sure there are judges for competitions and  things are done in a timely manner. There is an arena announcer or MC who calls the dancers, and explains what is happening for those who have never been to a powwow.

The Grand Entry is how every powwow begins. There is music with drums and vocables playing for the entry. Everyone stands in respect. First to enter the arena are those carrying the flags of the United States, Tribal flags, the POW flags and Eagle staffs from various Native Nations. The American Flag is always carried by veterans. Sometimes they are all Native American and other times there are a mix of cultures. Next to join the Grand Entry are the Tribal Chiefs, Princesses, Elders and then the powwow organizers. The male dancers who are competing and then the women dancers. When everyone has entered the arena a song of the flags is performed. Then a prayer of gratitude is given. Typically the prayer is offered in the native tongue of the spiritual adviser of the powwow and then often repeated in English. The entire group then participates in a few round dances before the competition begins. If the only thing you got to see was the Grand Entry, it is still an education and moving experience.

The powwow continues with a series of competitions for the singers and the dancers. The regalia  worn by the dancers are often bright and vibrant. The Native American culture is very much a living culture so there will be traditional clothing with some of the bling of modern times. It is an explosion of beads, feathers, leather and movement.

This is a great experience for young and old alike. Come, enjoy, learn and share.
