Ethical Egoism and Contradiction
“I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man,
nor ask another man to live for mine.”
Atlas Shrugged-Ayn Rand (Alice Rosenbaum )
This little philosophy has to deal with Egoism
Now I so do love that quote. I love it because it conflicts with human mind and human heart.
It conflicts with personal importance and social(by social importance I don’t necessarily mean society as a whole , I am also considering a relationship consisting of two people or a family even) importance.
It can be a question of morality what is better for a community or it can take a stand of what is better for one’s self.
I think this boarders both grounds.
Now taken into account of Ethical Egoism, minds no one’s wishes but the interest that one takes within themselves. I do believe self interest is important, because it’s always good to not only better yourself but to be true to yourself, but in no way shape or form do I ever believe that the things you do to satisfy yourself should take any negative effect on any one other person. I support Ethical Egoism in the idea that you do what is right for you, but in the neutral sense or beneficial senses only when it comes to what others around you might not gain or gain.
As you may have figured out by now (if you looked at the links) there are 3 types of ethical egoism, which one of I find quite funny… as you may have read already let me quote in case you did not:
‘Three different formulations of ethical egoism have been identified: individual, personal and universal. An individual ethical egoist would hold that all people should do whatever benefits him;A personal ethical egoist, that he should act in his own self-interest, but makes no claims about what anyone else ought to do, while universal ethical egoists argue that everyone should act in ways that are in their own interest. ‘
The highlighted Universal ethical egoists is actually pretty funny if you think about it. This group of ethical egoists are insisting other people in fact everyone should act in their own interests, which is in itself them acting in other’s interests to act in their own interests. (I am not sure you follow along with that because I can be quite confusing with my thought process of things, but it really is a bit of a contradiction - which leads me to another quote of Atlas shrugged)
“Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think that you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong.”(this is my claim that Universal Ethical Egoism is not truly a form of Ethical Egoism)
Now reader (if in fact someone out there IS reading this) what is your opinion about Egoism, are you pretty much in the same boat as I am or do you also support the virtue of selfishness. I have the same stand on both ideas. I do believe it’s a good thing to go out and earn and get what you want, to improve yourself, to be happy. But I decline the idea that it should ever invade another person’s happiness.
Do you agree with the second quote? I do. You in fact can’t be both. One or the other, you are or you aren’t.
