Argument against Sterotype Gender Roles

Nothing is wrong with children having gender roles. Its is a natural thing. However the idea that a girl must have children, get married and cook and clean for their husband is wrong and I think that anyone who holds that view is single minded and I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks this.

Even today in a modern society of which I live in. I see the influence of gender roles on young children. Simple thing like looking for a present for a young boy. These presents may be an Action man or some other army type action figure. I for one had an Action man when I was little and I also had a children’s spy kit and it became my ambition to be a spy. Some young boys had play tools as well. My point is that even through buying a child a gift, we see the role that gender roles have. As I have pointed out a young boy plays with things which idolises the army or just fighting or building. This is a stereotypical view the type of hunter gather that men in the influence of gender rolls are seen as. I hope my point is clear enough and at this moment you do not frown too deeply at what I am writing. But we see the influences of gender roles in girls toys too. For Christmas my little sister used to get dolls, prams and dolls of little babies, a play kitchen she even wanted a play ironing board and iron. That is when my farther refused.

You see, I think that the things which my sister wanted for Christmas over the years were items which suggest what she is being encouraged to do by gender roles. All these things represented the stereotypical role of a woman, to look after the children, to cook and too clean the house. Also with the boy’s they are encouraged to play at either working or fighting. Now I’m not suggesting that this influence to the boys is the governments way off influencing them to enrol with the army when they are older, and the toys are used as an early kind of proper gander, certainly not.

From this though I think the question arises, weather boys naturally want toys and other things which are associated with war or fighting, or if its just the influences on which society has on them. I mean some girls do come into womanhood wanting to be the ideal housewife and have children and all that, but nowadays many women do not. Many women are completely independent and some of the worlds largest businesses are run by women.

In conclusion I do say down with the gender rolls. But that does not mean we should reverse the rolls, no we should encourage individuals to do things more often which would have been frowned upon by society, we’ve came a long way in the past 2000 years and change is happening all the time, gender roles have been changing and will keep changing and I for one am glad for it.
