The right of casino gambling on reservations

It is the right of any Native American to do with whatever they wish with their land. The whole United States of America was founded by the Native Americans regardless of what Christopher Columbus may have decided to be true. They were here before the English settlers and they had their homes stolen from them. The Native Americans were so mistreated for so many years and for so long, they were a peaceful nation. When they finally decided to fight for what was right, they were labeled as “savages” and other such names.

The later governments weren’t much better where the Natives were concerned either. They took the very worst (and worthless) pieces of land there was and put the Natives there and built fences to keep them in. It was the government that told them that this is their home. For years, the Natives were the forgotten people. They were not privy to the same benefits that the rest of the country was. They became invisible to this government.

Left to fend for themselves, the Natives did the best they could with what little they had. Most of them lived in sheer poverty for all their lives. That was until one very smart Native American had the state of mind to give back to the government a little piece of what was given to them for so long. They took advantage of the rules that were given to them and made those rules work to their benefit. They figured out a way to benefit from the very same government that had done nothing but take from them for so long and they did it legally based on the very laws that were bestowed upon them.

There isn’t one person outside of these tribes that would have done anything different if they had come up with a windfall of an idea themselves. The new-found wealth of the Native American population has enabled them to provide food, clothing, education and shelter for their people. Anyone who has blood rights to the tribes are entitled to health insurance. They are still a community within themselves, they are just entitled to live the life they should have been able to all along. How can this be wrong?

Yes, there are still going to be people within those tribes who benefit from the money these casinos are generating and may not be handling it well but that is their right. There is no difference in that culture (in this sense) than there is in the American culture. There are always going to be people who blow every last cent they make and there will always be people who know how to turn a penny into a dollar. But it is the inalienable right of everyone who has the money to do what they want to with it. Nobody has any right to say any differently, especially if they live outside of these tribes.
