Lake Monsters probably do not Exist - No
Please somebody; prove this wrong. If we are to define lake monsters as large beasts, such as the prehistoric Plesiosaur, it is very unlikely that they exist.
Hundreds of children, author included, grew up hearing stories of the great Loch Ness Monster, or Ogopogo, or any other lake dwelling monster. They regularly scanned their local lakes in search of the beast only to see nothing but waves, or floating logs. They may have even tip-toed silently along the shores, afraid of being eaten. Countless people have explored countless lakes searching for proof of something as big as a house, and with an appetite to match, and yet after decades of looking, and even technology advancements, no proof has ever been found.
Sonar equipment has detected large masses, but scientists are not convinced that this is proof of a monster, saying the masses could be nothing more than schools of fish. Which simply raises another concern. With no predators in the lake, either the population of monsters would have sky rocketed or they would have already eaten themselves out of existence - they would have consumed their food source. Even vegetarian monsters would have eaten the lakes free of plant matter.
One common area of mistaken identity is the fact that when you look at most of the lakes where monsters are said to exist, Lock Ness and Okanagan Lake, they tend to have one thing in common, they are long and narrow bodies of water. When we look at large long and narrow lakes we occasionally see that they have a small tendency to become tidal. Although rare, when it occurs a single wave can form and flow down a lake appearing very much to be a swimming lake monster.
Additionally people tend to see what they want to see. People still look at the picture of the Lock Ness Monster with its body showing and it head held out of the water. Even though this is now known to be a hoax people still look at it in wonderment that it could have been real. A such a floating log could, in someones mind, be a lake monster.
Cryptozoology is the name given to the division of science that looks for these kinds of beasts. They look for everything from Lake Monsters, to Sasquatch (Bigfoot), to Unicorns. As technology advances perhaps they will one day find one, or real evidence of one. While highly doubtful, nobody would be disappointed if they did, author included.
