Protecting yourself from a werewolf is a bit more difficult than protecting yourself from a vampire, but it can still be done.  The first thing that you need to be able to do to protect yourself from a werewolf is to be able to recognize one before it transforms.  The people that are afflicted with the lycanthrope disease often have a very haggard look to them, especially when they get near the cycle of the full moon, which triggers their disease and causes them to transform.  During the full moon, the person will not be seen in the daytime as they are usually sleeping due to the werewolf making his rounds at night.  The most little known way of identifying a werewolf is in the hands.  In a beast like a werewolf, the first three fingers, index, middle and ring, will be the exact same length.  If you find yourself close enough to identify this trait, then you should really pay attention to the rest of this article.

Once you can identify the werewolf, stay as far away from the creature as you can.  They are not bound by the inability to enter your home until invited, but they are motivated by primal hunger, and will almost always take the easy route to food, rather than having to break into a locked house at night.  So, when the full moon comes about, make sure that you are indoors when the moon comes out and you should be fine.

If you find yourself confronted with a werewolf, the key is to not get bitten.  If  you are bitten, then the disease has found its way into your bloodstream, and with the turning of the next full moon, you will find yourself sleeping during the day because your werewolf form will have been out hunting during the nights of the full moon.  At this point, you will no longer need to protect yourself from a werewolf as you would be one.

The only way to kill a werewolf is through the precious metal silver.  A silver bullet is the best way because these kill from a distance, and distance is what you want.  However, a silver knife or a wooden spear with a silver tip will also work.  That being said, the hunting of werewolves should never be undertaken by amateurs.  Leave the killing of werewolves to the professionals as they are far better at it than you are and they are less likely to help to populate the ranks of the werewolves during the hunt.

When it comes to werewolves, staying away from them is the best bet.  However, if you are confronted, do not try to reason with them or talk to them because the person that you are trying to communicate with is no longer there.  The beast has completely taken them and until they again change to their human form, they are a primal hunter and nothing more.
